An IV needle was taped to the back of her hand, clear fluid dripping steadily through the tube.

Without even needing to look, she knew Lucas was there.

When she turned her head, her assumption was proven right.

Lucas was sitting in the chair beside her bed, though his expression was heavier than she had ever seen it.

"The doctor said your body is severely compromised. You need to stay under observation for a week."

He didn't interrogate her about hiding the miscarriage, nor did he press her on the hell she had endured over the years. He only said:

"Don't let this happen again." Don't let yourself get hurt anymore.

He spoke the words softly, but his eyes carried an unshakable intensity.

Sienna lowered her gaze, remaining silent. She truly had no idea how to repay everything Lucas was doing for her.

Silence stretched between them for a few heartbeats.

Lucas was just about to speak when a voice drifted from the end of the hall.

"Which room is Sienna in? Grant, could you hold me? My ankle is still throbbing..."

Lyla's gratingly sweet voice pierced right through the heavy door.

Grant's reply followed. "If you're hurt, you should be resting at home. Why insist on coming here to suffer?"

"I was worried about her. Seeing her faint like that really scared me."

The two people inside the room simultaneously looked toward the door.

Lucas stood up, adjusting his suit jacket, and gave a firm instruction.

"Stay in bed. I'll handle this."

He stepped out, pulling the door completely shut behind him, his towering frame blocking the entrance.

From behind him, Lyla chimed in at exactly the right moment, her voice soft and trembling. "Grant, let it go. Sienna probably really resents us. Since Mr. Lowery is keeping her company, I'm sure she is much happier."

"We can always come back another time. Even if I have to beg on my hands and knees, I will make sure she comes home with you."

Grant looked at her, his heart aching. "You don't need to do that. Returning to the Gauthier family is her duty. We don't owe her anything."

Inside the room, Sienna listened to their exchange, a bitter, self-deprecating laugh escaping her lips.

They didn't owe her anything. Right.

The pathetic routine was enough to make Lucas sick. Just as he was about to order security to throw them out, frantic footsteps echoed down the hall.

Grant's assistant sprinted toward them, panting heavily, his face drenched in sweat.

"Boss! We have a problem." He kept his voice low, but the words carried clearly to everyone present.

"The hospital is completely surrounded by the media!"
