Seeing his lack of reaction, Lyla's heart sank inch by inch.
She knew staying any longer today would only invite further humiliation.
She shot Sienna one last venomous glare, clutched her swollen cheek, and stumbled out the door.
At the doorway, she paused, seemingly waiting for Grant to call her back.
Grant opened his mouth but ultimately didn't make a sound.
Never receiving that plea to stay, Lyla bit her lip and pushed her way out.
The door clicked shut once more.
The circus had finally come to an end.
The sprawling living room descended into a deathly silence.
Madeline looked between the remaining people, finally letting her sympathy for her son win out. She muttered softly, "Mom, look, everyone's gone. Let's just drop this..."
"Shut up!"
Eleanor barked sharply, causing Madeline to shrink her neck in fear.
"Now that the outsiders are gone, Sienna, Grant, both of you come here."
The two walked over, standing on either side of her.
Although they were less than three feet apart, it felt as if a massive mountain stood between them, making the air suffocatingly heavy.
Eleanor had spent her life as the matriarch of the family. The one thing she couldn't stand was seeing a good marriage destroyed. She had painstakingly chosen Sienna to be her granddaughter-in-law, knowing she was educated, reasonable, and steady.
She genuinely loved the girl like her own flesh and blood.
Even with things blowing up like this, she refused to believe eight years of marriage could vanish overnight.
Eleanor took Sienna's hand, softening her tone. "Sienna, I know you've been deeply wronged. Let me apologize on Grant's behalf for all this mess."
"He's young, someone fed him some lies, and he did something incredibly foolish," the older woman rambled softly, her eyes reddening again. "But you're still husband and wife. This family needs you."
Her eyes widened as she stared at Sienna in sheer disbelief, then whipped her head toward Grant.
"What nonsense are you talking about? You two were perfectly fine. When... when did you get a divorce?"
"Two weeks ago," Sienna said, her tone as flat as if she were discussing the weather.
Only her lowered eyelashes hid the exhaustion and absolute resolve in her eyes.
Eleanor sank into thought, her brows knitting tightly together.
As if a sudden realization hit her, she jerked her head up and glared furiously at Grant. "Was it you! Did you bully her again?!"
Grant hadn't expected Sienna to just drop the news of the divorce right then and there.
He had originally planned to wait until she gave birth. Then he'd have Lyla use the baby to curry favor with the family, securing their approval before finally announcing the split.
Every single one of his calculations and plans...
In this very moment, were entirely blown to pieces.
