Scar’s POV
Dear Diary,
I have never felt terror like this before in my entire life. Sometimes, a girl has no choice but to take
matters into her own hands.
A sharp, unbearable pain pulses through my head. I groan and slowly raise a hand, pressing my fingers against my scalp as I feel around carefully. I don’t detect any bumps, which makes me think! didn’t smash my head into anything. With my eyes still shut, I try to focus on my surroundings, and that’s when I notice movement beneath me–subtle bouncing and a gentle rocking sensation. Am I on
a boat?
Gradually, my hearing kicks in, and the sound of an engine fills my ears. That confirms it–I’m
definitely on a boat. But how did I end up here? I finally open my eyes and immediately realize the ceiling is inches above my face. I’m grateful I didn’t try to sit up blindly, because I absolutely would have knocked myself out.
I turn my head and take in my surroundings. I’m inside an extremely small cabin. I’m not lying on the floor but on a thin mattress resting on a raised platform. Slowly, I roll onto my side, then onto my stomach, and carefully slide myself down off the platform. The room sways slightly as dizziness hits me, combined with the constant motion of the boat.
Once I steady myself, I make my way toward the cabin door. I open it and peer into a narrow hallway. On my left is a bathroom, and just across from it on the right is a compact galley kitchen. Ahead of
that, a short set of steps leads up to a hatch–style opening.
Through it, I can tell it’s nighttime. The sky is filled with countless stars. I cautiously climb up through the hatch and freeze when I realize there’s no land visible anywhere–only open water in every direction. I turn, and that’s when I see a man sitting in the driver’s seat of the boat.
“Rowan?”
He turns toward me and smiles. Lust fills his eyes, and the smile on his face is more of a predatory leer than anything warm.
“Scar,” Rowan says smoothly. “You’re finally awake. I’ve been waiting.”
“How am I ending up here with you?”
My pulse is racing violently.

My eyes dart everywhere, searching desperately for anything that could serve as a weapon.
“I grabbed you from the station. Are you dealing with a headache? I apologize for that. Chloroform
tends to cause that effect.”
“Rowan, what the hell is happening right now?”
“It’s very straightforward. I want you. There’s absolutely no reason I shouldn’t be able to have you. You hand yourself over to those two assholes without hesitation, so there’s no reason you can’t do the same for me. On top of that, Jace and Milo embarrassed me and cost me my job. I owe them payback, and this is the ideal way to get it.”
“Rowan, this is absurd. You can’t kidnap me and seriously believe I’ll just go along with it.”
“Oh, sweetheart. I don’t require your cooperation. I’ll simply take what I want. Your soft little body will be mine. I’ve wanted you from the moment I first saw you. You were dressed in a cute white sundress. It had tiny purple flowers scattered across it. You were wearing white sandals on your small feet. Your hair was pulled into a high ponytail, and you were leaning forward as you pulled a pie from the oven. When you sensed me there and turned around, the smile you gave me was incredible. From that instant on, I fell in love with you. You have no idea how crushed I felt when I learned you were involved with both Milo and Jace. You never had to whore yourself out to those two. I’m more than enough of a man to satisfy all of your needs.”
“First off, you are completely delusional as fuck. Second, as I’ve already told you, Jace, Milo, and I are in a loving and committed relationship. Finally, you don’t just fall in love like that, Rowan. You don’t know a single thing about me. You harassed me nonstop. I never once encouraged the attention you forced on me. My eyes belong only to Milo and Jace, and my heart belongs solely to them.”
“You just haven’t experienced me yet. I’ll turn your entire world upside down.”
After saying that, he rises to his feet and shuts off the engine.
Fuck that shit.
This boat is far too small, and I would rather die than be raped by this unhinged asshole.
I scan the area in panic as he moves closer to me.
There’s nothing around that I can use.
He’s only a few steps away when I finally think, fuck it.
I sprint toward the edge of the boat and throw myself straight into the water.
“Scar,” Rowan roars.

I don’t hesitate for even a second and immediately start swimming as fast as my body will allow,
putting as much distance between myself and the boat as possible.
I know this is a terrible idea.
I have no clue where I’m headed.
I’m going to wear myself out quickly.
I’m nowhere near an Olympic–level swimmer.
I hear the boat’s engine fire up, sputter, and then die.
Yes!
I keep swimming.
When I glance back, I’m shocked by how far I’ve already gotten.
I wonder if he can still see me.
It’s incredibly dark out.
I make a split–second choice and begin swimming to my left instead of continuing in the straight path
he last saw.
I can still hear him struggling to restart the engine.
My arms are starting to ache.
The water isn’t cold, thank God, but I know that the longer I stay in it, the more my core temperature
will drop and cause uncontrollable shivering.
I roll onto my back and let myself float.
I rest my arms and legs and allow the ocean’s current to carry me.
At this point, nothing matters as long as I’m far away from Rowan.
I hear the engine finally catch.
I bob in the water, watching as the boat heads off in the direction he last saw me swimming.
I smile.
I turn and begin swimming the opposite way.
Whenever exhaustion overwhelms me, I stop and float.

My teeth begin to chatter.
I don’t know how long I drift before I hear a bell, followed by my body colliding with something solid.
I push myself upright.
It’s a buoy–a yellow one.
I vaguely remember Milo once telling me they were yellow.
Using the last bit of strength I have left, I manage to haul myself up and sit on it.
I lean back against one of the long metal poles and try to rest.
Tears sting my eyes.
I’m utterly exhausted, and the cold is settling in.
Somewhere in the water, I’ve lost my shoes.
I feel completely miserable and pathetic.
When I look around, I see nothing but darkness.
Except, when I squint, I think I spot faint lights far off in the distance.
If that’s land, it’s extremely far away.
There’s no chance I could ever swim that far.
I shut my eyes and let out a long sigh.
I don’t know how long I stay there resting–I may have even dozed off–when I hear a rhythmic thwap. thwap, thwap.
I snap my eyes open.
I tilt my head toward the sky, following the sound.
Off to my right, high above me, a helicopter hovers.
I stand up on the buoy, gripping the metal with everything I have.
I scream, jumping up and down, waving my free arm wildly.
The helicopter sweeps the water, and all I can do is pray the powerful searchlight is meant for me.
The beam passes over me, then moves away, and then swings back and settles directly on me.

I break down sobbing and collapse back down.
Several minutes pass, and then a voice comes over a loudspeaker, identifying themselves as the US
Coast Guard.
My sobs intensify.
I’m safe.
All I want is to get back to Milo and Jace.
I watch as a man secured in a harness is slowly lowered toward me.
“Are you Scarlett Joseph?”
“Yes,” I manage to say through a choke of emotion.
“It’s her,” he says into the microphone clipped to his gear. A long rescue basket descends toward us. He helps position me inside it, guiding me to lie back before fastening the straps securely around me. Moments later, I rise into the air, lifted steadily until I reach the open helicopter doors. The basket is hauled inside, and I remain restrained while the man who came down climbs back in after me. The helicopter lifts off. I shut my eyes and cry silently. I am safe now; Rowan can’t reach me anymore. I am going home, and all I want is my guys.
