“I mentioned to you that Jace and I will handle him during the basketball game. We hope he
will become less persistent now.”
Scar forms her mouth into a surprised ‘O‘ shape, then she leans over and whispers to Natalie, who tips her head back and laughs heartily.
By the time our game concludes, Rowan has sustained scrapes on both his knees and along his left shin, a jammed pinky finger on his left hand, a bloody bottom lip, and a left eye that is beginning to swell black, courtesy of one of Jace’s elbows; he is also walking with a limp. Jace and I have secured the victory, 20 points to 14. Everyone collects their chairs. Scar announces that lunch will be ready in five minutes. The four of us remain
behind to cool down.
“Listen, Rowan, when we instruct you to cease talking about, thinking about, and bothering our girl, we are entirely serious. This is merely a tiny sample of what we can accomplish without facing repercussions. Keep completely away from Scar. Stop invading her personal space. Stop with the sexual hints. If we receive another report of you harassing her, you will endure more than you did today. We have connections who have other connections. Furthermore, her father is acquainted with many dangerous individuals. So back off,” I state. Jace and Dylan stand beside me, their arms folded, nodding in firm agreement.
“Screw all three of you. I am only joking with her and trying to provoke you. Do you think I would want a whore who enjoys sleeping with faggots?”
Jace springs toward him, but Dylan moves more swiftly. Dylan delivers an uppercut, and as Rowan falls, Dylan lands on top of him. He punches Rowan in the stomach and then in the
right eye.
“That is to match your left eye, you jerk. Those are my friends you are insulting. Do not imagine I will hesitate to report your words to the Chief, you asshole.”
Then Dylan climbs off him and marches toward the station doors.
“Oh, you are in serious trouble now,” I remark. Jace kicks him hard in the stomach, causing Rowan to curl into a fetal position. I spit on him as we turn and walk away.

“That is enjoyable,” Jace comments.

“Yes, it is. I am extremely hungry now. I wonder what Scar prepares?”
Scar has prepared Honey Glazed Garlic Salmon served over Quinoa. Everyone is in a state
of bliss. The Chief cannot stop groaning with pleasure, which makes everyone at the table
chuckle.
“Where is Rowan?” I inquire.
“He is packing his belongings. I refuse to tolerate a homophobic jerk in my firehouse,” the
Chief declares.
Grunts of approval sound from all around the table.
Natalie and Scar remain in the kitchen area. They are cleaning the lunch dishes even
though the Chief tells them not to. However, Scar informs him she needs to prepare our
dinner. He reluctantly agrees. I observe her and Natalie chatting closely. They have their
heads together. I notice a slight smile on Scar’s face, which causes me to smile as well. I glance at Jace, and he too is watching her with a smile on his face.
“Soon, my friend. She will be bonded to us very soon,” he murmurs to me.
“Did you two obtain her father’s permission?” the Chief asks. The others at the table around
us fall silent, listening to our discussion.
“All of you keep this quiet. Yes, we secured her father’s permission. I am planning to ask
her at midnight on New Year’s,” I say.
“Is that not Jace’s birthday?” inquires the Chief.
“Yes, and if she agrees, it will be the finest birthday gift she could receive,” Jace replies.
Whispers of good luck travel to us from everyone present.
“Excuse me, when is our Secret Santa selection happening?” Brenna interjects abruptly.
“On Monday. I will speak with Captain Santiago and include the names from his shift in the hat. After that, we will combine them with our shift’s names and proceed with the drawing,”
the Chief explains.

“It is unfortunate that we are scheduled to work this Christmas. Chief, may I please, please have Scar stay overnight on Christmas Eve? It will be our first Christmas together,” I ask, directing my most pleading, puppy–dog gaze toward him. Jace lets out a derisive snort.
“Very well, but absolutely no inappropriate behavior,” he concedes.
“We give you our word,” I assure him, glancing toward Jace. Jace nods in confirmation while hurriedly shoveling food into his mouth. Suddenly, the emergency alarms blare loudly.. I release a sigh and rapidly force three forkfuls into my mouth, consuming the remainder of my meal. After Jace and I each kiss Scar, and Dylan does the same with Natalie, we depart.
