Brennan’s POV

I find myself again at the same coffee shop where I saw those two men previously. I am

hoping to run into them once more. I want to see if they happen to know this guy, Dylan. I

am certain he is one of her lovers. They are not present, however. After finishing my coffee,

I take a walk around the area. Since it is nearly lunchtime, I wander in the direction of the fire department. I know that her lovers are firefighters. The day is warm, and I am wearing a

pair of red basketball shorts along with a black tank top. I have also purchased new flip-

flops and a pair of sunglasses. If Scar wants to remain here, I can accept that.

I will give her whatever she desires. I am standing across the street from the firehouse

when I notice some men outside talking. Aren’t those the same two guys? I lean my back

against a tree and observe. I cannot make out their words. There are cars parked along the

street, so I am partly concealed from view.

They begin a basketball game. Other people emerge from the firehouse carrying chairs and settle around to watch. Oth Chapter Unlocked, Enjoy Reading! can see money being exchanged; it appears they are placing bets on the game. Then I spot her. I inhale sharply.

She is incredibly beautiful. Her long black hair is tied up in a high ponytail, and she is

wearing shorts and a crop top. She and Natalie come out of the firehouse and sit down on

some chairs.

Why is she there? I hear yelling and see one of the players on the ground. I hear him shout

at his partner, and he called him Dylan. My focus locks onto him. So that is one of Scar’s

lovers. He possesses nothing compared to me. I am far better looking than this guy. I scoff mentally. Scar has definitely downgraded. The game continues. They foul him repeatedly.

I wince when the guy who was on the ground receives an elbow directly to one of his eyes. That is certainly going to leave a bruise. I shake my head at the unfolding scene. It becomes clear that two of the three men are truly picking on the fourth player. At one point,

one of the guys runs over to Scar and kisses her. I seethe inside. He is a bully, and he has

just placed his lips on my wife. She smiles up at him. Then her expression shifts to one of

shock. After that, she and Natalie throw their heads back and laugh.

When the game concludes, everyone disperses, and Scar yells something about lunch, so

she apparently works there as a cook. I remain standing in the shadows and watch the three guys confront the fourth. I hear him call Scar a whore, and he uses another derogatory term. That guy, Dylan, launches himself forward and beats the other man

severely. I may need to reassess my first impression of him.

He clearly knows how to fight. I am not much of a fighter myself. I am a fit guy, and not many men challenge me, so I rarely get into physical fights. One of the men kicks the fallen guy, and the one who kissed Scar spits on him. Then they all walk back into the fire station.

I run over to the man lying on the ground.

“Hey, are you all right? What exactly happened here?” I inquire, extending my hand toward

him.

“I’m okay; it was just a dispute over the cook we have working here. She’s a complete

whore. She sleeps with two of those guys, and they also sleep with each other. All I did was

make a few jokes about her, perhaps flirt with her a little, and they completely

misunderstood. I was only having fun. I admit I pushed things a bit too far today, though.

I’m probably heading into a lot of trouble now. But whatever. I’ve been tired of this place for

some time. I need more excitement. Sorry for dumping all this on a stranger.”

“No issue at all; I’m Brennan.”

“Rowan Vance.”

“Do you want to go get a beer? You seem like you could use one.”

“Hmm, let me go speak with my Chief first. Give me about ten minutes.”

I wait for fifteen minutes before he comes stomping back out carrying a couple of bags.

“It appears I’ve just been released. No transfer. Apparently, my Chief has influence with the

higher–ups, and they simply fired me.”

“That’s rough, man. Let’s go get you that beer; it’s my treat,” I tell him.

He has a truck, and he drives us to the nearest bar.

We take a table and order a couple of beers. We also order some wings.

“So, tell me about this woman.”
