Where the hell is she? I am lingering outside the fire station, hoping to catch a glimpse of Scar. For three whole hours, I have been standing across the street. I am growing both hot and hungry. Could today be their day off? It is Friday–shouldn’t she be working right now?

A man dressed in khaki pants and a white shirt steps out from the open bay and places his hands on his hips. He simply stares right at me. Damn, does he realize how long I have been posted here? I consider crossing the street to ask him about Scar. Just as I prepare to move from behind the tree, he begins walking toward me.

“Hello, I’m Captain Santiago. You have been out here in this heat for a very long time, watching the station. Is there anything I might help you with?”

“Uh, I was actually wondering how someone gets a job here,” I reply, suddenly panicking.

“Well, there is training you must complete before any assignment to a fire station. Certain certifications are also required. You appear quite fit, but how would you rate your stamina?”

“Fairly good. I run five miles every day.” At least, I did before the divorce. I really should start again.

“That’s positive. I have some materials I can provide. Why don’t you come inside? I can give you a quick tour along with that information.”

“Alright.” I follow him. Nervousness tightens in my chest. What if Scar is inside? If she

spots me, will she feel happiness or panic? My palms begin to sweat. I notice some women

glance at me while they work inside an ambulance. Several men are inspecting a fire truck,

while others sort through firefighting equipment. I trail the Captain into the kitchen area.

“It smells really good in here,” I remark.

“Yes, our chef prepares our meals and leaves instructions for cooking them on her days off.

The other shifts are lucky bastards to receive her fresh food. But even reheated, it is still damn good.”

“There is nothing like a woman who knows how to cook.”

“That’s true. She is taken, however. She is in a relationship with two of our guys on the very shift she works. Lucky fuckers, in my opinion. She is beautiful, cooks wonderfully, is funny. and sweet, and a great conversationalist. She is also extremely smart. She designs a workout routine for both of our shifts. Which is necessary, because with her cooking, we

have all noticed our pants fitting a little tighter,” he says with a chuckle.

I smile. That sounds exactly like my Scar. She is always considering the fitness of everyone

around her.

“So, she is not working today?”

“Nope, it is her weekend off, the same as Milo and Jace, her boyfriends.”

“That is somewhat unusual. I don’t believe I have ever heard of men sharing one woman in

a relationship.”

“Well, they are all in the relationship together. If you get assigned here, you are going to see that many of us–depending on which shift you join–have alternative lifestyles. Our Chief is married to a man. You have Scar and her men. Aria, out there, one of our paramedics, is

with two women. They visit frequently. What about you? Are you married? Have a

girlfriend? Boyfriend?”

“I am divorced, so single. But I am hoping to win her back. She has strayed from the path we planned for our lives; she is a little confused, but I am here to help her. She still loves

me.”

“Oh, well, I hope everything works out for you.”

“Thank you, I feel the same.” I wait for him to provide the details I know I will never need. He is an exceptionally pleasant person, quite conversational.

“So, how are the shifts arranged here?”

“We operate on a Panama schedule. It follows a 3, 2, 2, 3 pattern. That means you work

three days, are off for two, work two days, and then are off for three. After that, the

sequence continues as 2, 2, 3.”

“Oh, so does that mean you actually only work for half the year?”

“Correct.”

“That is really interesting. Well, I appreciate you telling me. I am currently searching for somewhere to live. Are you aware of any available rentals?”

“Not in the immediate area. Nearly everyone in this neighborhood owns their home, or a condo. There is a condominium building located four blocks from here. That is where Jace, Milo, and Scar reside. I am certain they have units for sale in that building. My wife and I have actually been attempting to secure a place there ourselves. We want to live nearer to

the beach.”

I smile, feeling content that I have obtained the information I was seeking.
