I watch Brennan walk out of the room. That son of a bitch. I have been trying to find him. He ditched his phone on me, so I could not reach him. What if I had been pregnant and needed to tell him? There is no way I am letting him get away from me again. I clean my face with a paper towel. Then I leave the room and see him heading for the elevator. Instead of following him onto it, I choose to take the

stairs. Ever will be asleep for a little while longer. Being a single mom is exhausting. I deserve a good life. I have been trying to find a husband for so long. Why can’t men love me? They just see me and

want a good time, never a forever. I truly thought that by getting pregnant, Evan would leave his boring

wife for me. But no such luck.

I run down the stairs as fast as I can. I curse under my breath when I see him get into the back of a

car, which means he does not have his own truck with him. Why?

He had to come back to visit his mother, and I am going to be waiting. I need to think about what to do with Ever. I love her, I truly do, but I need her not to be around right now. I go back up to her room and sit down, looking at her. She is almost 8 years old. Her birthday is right around the corner. She needs her father in her life. I think back to when Evan gave me the million dollars. He said he was done, that I

was never to contact him again. But he is about to get the surprise of his life. It is time for Ever to be

with her dad.

I go to the nursesstation and ask for a pen and three pieces of paper.

First, I write a letter to Ever, telling her how much I love her but that I need to find her a more stable home life. That I cannot take care of her right now, but I will be back. She is to live with her daddy and

be a very good girl.

Next, I write a letter to Evan. I list the foods Ever likes, the foods she does not like, her allergies, and the medication she takes. I include her social security number along with her blood type. I tell him how special she is and that she enjoys drawing. I also state that I will be back for her. I warn him that if he does not take good care of her, I will make him regret it. I have pictures and videos of us, and he knows it. I do not care how he explains Ever to his wife, just that he had better make sure Ever lives a happy life.

The Jast letter I write is to the hospital, telling them who to contact: Evan Redwood, CEO of Redwood Innovations. I look up the company’s phone number and also provide the last known number I had for Evan. I add that he will be taking care of all her medical expenses.

I crease the documents neatly and wait. When morning comes, Ever says her head is in terrible pain. I go to fetch the doctor right away. He explains that he wants to run several tests and order an MRI. I give my permission. I know, with absolute certainty, that this is the final moment I will ever see my

baby. I lean down, press a kiss to her forehead, and tell her how deeply I love her. Strangely enough,1 feel no remorse at all. I am confident Evan will look after her properly,

Ever is rolled away on the gurney. I trail behind it and step out just in time to notice Brennan guiding his mother toward the elevator. This is the opening I need. I hurry back into Ever’s room. I place the papers on the chair where I had been sitting so they will be impossible to overlook. Then I rush back to the stairwell and take the stairs again, reaching the lobby precisely as Brennan and his mother exit the hospital with a nurse beside them.

His car is parked out front, and he carefully lifts his mother from the wheelchair into the passenger seat. He thanks the nurse politely and walks around the front of the car. He never once notices me. I sprint to my own vehicle, which happens to be parked close by. I trail them for a while until they stop in front of a charming house. I park a few homes away, I observe him assist her out of the car and guide

her inside. Now what comes next? I stay put, sitting there for several hours,
