My phone rings more than once, and each time I see the hospital’s number on the screen. They must have finished the tests by now and discovered the letters. Gambling on my decision, I drive away. I dispose of my phone and purchase a replacement. I stock up on snacks, drinks, tissues, and a book. I return to the house where Brennan is staying and notice that his car is still parked there.

My thoughts keep circling back to what I have just done to my little girl. Still, I tell myself this is the right choice. I am set on starting a new life with a man I know I can make fall for me. He can barely keep his hands to himself whenever I am near him. Deep inside, I am certain Brennan wants me just as intensely as I want him. Drunk or sober, he could have stopped. Even when you are drunk, you are aware of your actions. I have been drunk many times and I can still remember exactly what I did.

Brennan, no, I forbid it!The shout jolts me awake as my head shaps up from drifting.

I lower my window completely so I can hear every word.

Mom, you don’t get to decide my life! I am going back to Florida to be with Scar. She’s the only thing I

want!

Damn Scar. It always comes back to her. He needs to let that go.

She doesn’t want you. She’s already in a committed relationship.

Well, that is interesting. Little Miss Perfect has moved on already.

You can’t call what she has a relationship, Mother. She needs me.

Brennan Callum! If you do this, don’t come back. It pains me to say it, but I am deeply disappointed in you. Leave that girl alone!

Mama, you don’t understand what you’re saying. Go inside and take your medication. I’ll return soon.

He climbs into the car and drives away. I hear his mother scream his name one final time. I start my engine and follow him, keeping a careful distance. He heads straight for the airport. That explains why he doesn’t have his truck. I stay behind him as he pulls up to a rental return kiosk. He parks, and I continue past without stopping. He has no idea I am tailing him. I can’t help but shake my head at how unsuspecting he is. I pull into a loading zone and abandon my car. I won’t need it anymore. All I take

with me is my wallet. Everything else can be replaced later.

I trail him quietly. I stop at the flight boards to check departures to Florida. There are three options: Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami. The Miami flight is boarding immediately, and Brennan doesn’t seem rushed, so I cross that one off. The Orlando flight leaves much later, while the Fort Lauderdale

flight departs in a couple of hours. I take the risk and buy a ticket using my new phone. He walks up to the AeroLink Airways counter, and I congratulate myself silently, because that airline is flying to Fort

Lauderdale. Once he finishes checking in, I do the same. It takes almost no time at all, since I have no

bags with me.

I have time to spare, so I grab something to eat, head to the restroom, and distract myself by messing around on my new phone. My thoughts drift to Ever and what she is doing right now, and a sharp pang of guilt twists in my chest. I am walking away from her the same way my mother walked away from

me when I was that agethough in her case, she died.

Evan has money, and with him, Ever will be provided for and live comfortably. I know with certainty that I am never returning to her, but she does not need to be Burdened with that truth. Making sure my

daughter has the life she deserves is the best choice I can make for her, even if it costs me everything.

Eventually, my flight is called. My pulse races at the thought that he might notice me boarding the plane. Somehow, fortune favors me. My seat is located closer to the front, and even though I trail six

passengers behind Brennan, he remains completely oblivious to my presence. His total lack of

situational awareness makes me shake my head again. He truly needs me to look after him.

A few hours later, I rush off the plane and take up a position where I can see the exit clearly. When Brennan appears, he is moving fast, paying attention to nothing around him, entirely absorbed in

wherever he is headed. He carries no luggage at all. I trail him out of the terminal. Panic spikes when I

see him heading toward shortterm parking. I stop, standing off to the side, and watch as he

disappears from view. Scanning my surroundings, I spot a cab. Moving fast, I sprint toward it and

throw myself inside.

Listen, this is going to sound insane,I tell the driver. But I’m on a mission to catch my cheating hu sband. If you agree to be my driver today and follow my instructions, I’ll tip you very well.

The cab driver turns his head toward me, one eyebrow arching in surprise.

You got it, lady.

Perfect. Take me to the shortterm parking exit and floor it. I’ll point out the vehicle we need to follow.

My excitement spikes when we pull up and I see Brennan standing at the kiosk.

Follow that truck,I order.

I can’t stop the smile from spreading across my face, Today, luck is firmly on my side.
