Sloane’s POV

My left leg trembles with nerves while I sit perched on a stiff plastic chair. I am informed that I have visitors waiting. I have no idea who would choose to come see me. I have not heard a word from anyone in six months. All around me, other inmates murmur inside their narrow cubicles, speaking softly to whoever stands behind the plexiglass separating them. The beige door swings open, and I draw in a sharp breath. Tears immediately well up as my little girl comes into view. She appears so tall, so grown, far more mature than I remember.
I instantly recognize the woman standing behind her. Lila. That means she and Evan are still a couple. I focus on Ever as she lowers herself into the plastic chair across from me. Her face is completely blank. She does not look angry, or upset, or frightened to be here. Lila rests both hands gently on Ever’s shoulders. The massive diamond ring on her left hand catches my eye. Jealousy coils tightly in
my chest.
I look back at Ever, gesture toward the phone on her side, and lift the receiver on my own. She does not react. Lila bends closer to her, takes the phone, and raises it to her own ear.
“Sloane. I brought Ever today because she told me she wanted to speak to you face–to–face. I want
Chapter Unlocked, Enjoy Reading! you to understand something very clearly-you are a low-down, filthy bitch. I cannot believe you walked away from your own child. Learning that you and Evan had an affair and produced an eight- year–old daughter was a brutal shock. But for the record, he and I are fine. I am not leaving him over a moment of bad judgment from nine years ago. My life is absolutely incredible. And strangely enough, Ever joining our family has been a blessing. Evan and I have a four–year–old son together. One year after our child was born, we discovered Evan had testicular cancer. He survived after treatment, but he
cannot have more children, so I am grateful to have a daughter.
Ever tilts her head up toward Lila, and I see her smile filled with pure love. The sight crushes my heart.
When she turns her gaze back to me, that smile completely disappears.
“She is an amazing child–smart, kind, and the most wonderful big sister to EJ. When Ever said she wanted to tell you something, Evan and I supported her fully, told her how courageous she was, and reminded her how deeply she is loved. Evan’s greatest regret is forcing you away instead of fighting for custody. He hates that he missed her first seven years. Still, he and Ever share an incredible bond now: He absolutely adores her.”
I feel happiness for her despite everything. I am relieved that her father claims her and that they share such a strong connection. I watch as Lila places the phone into my baby’s hands.
“Hi, sweetheart. I miss you more than you know, Eve. I am so sorry I left you at the hospital. You forgive mommy, don’t you?”

She studies me silently for a long stretch of time.

“I hate you for everything you did. You took Uncle Brennan away from me. He was the best. But I also
thank you for giving me the best mommy ever. She makes me happy, she never yells or leaves me
alone at home. She cooks me Mickey Mouse pancakes, and we bake cookies together all the time,
and I love her more than anything. My daddy is amazing too. He takes me and EJ to the park and
pushes us on the swings. I am glad you left me. Now I have a wonderful mommy, a great daddy, and a little brother. I never want to see you again. Ever.” Then she reaches up and hangs up the phone on her
end.
I watch her slide down from the chair and take Lila’s hand. Once more, she beams at her with
overflowing love, and Lila returns the smile. I stand there helplessly as they exit through the same door
they entered. Tears stream down my face, dripping from my chin. I place the phone back on the hook
and slowly rise to my feet. I drag myself over to the officer on duty, who escorts me back to my bunk.
“Who came to visit you?” my bunkmate, Tracy, asks.
“My daughter. She came to tell me she hates me and never wants to see me again.”
“Damn, that’s rough. My daughter did that too. I haven’t seen her in ten years.”
A sob tears out of me. I caused this. This is my reality for the next four and a half years. And I deserve
every second of it.
Rowan’s POV
I do not deserve this fate. I should be out there right now with the woman I crave. I need her light, her
warmth, in my life. I see her during the trial between those two pricks. They are not worthy of her. If she had never jumped off my boat, we could have made love and then disappeared anywhere in the world. She pretends she never wanted me, but I catch the heated glances she throws my way at the
fire station. She greets everyone with kindness, but her smiles for me burn brighter. I even once asked
her to cook beef stew, and she did. I know she wants me, but those two dirtbags keep us apart.
I cannot believe that bastard judge sentences me to thirty years without parole. I will prove them
wrong. I will break out, find Scar, and take her away again–only this time, I will keep my plans secret. Then we can finally live happily ever after. Yeah, I really like the sound of that. I am assigned laundry duty tomorrow. I will slip out with the filthy sheets stacked in the laundry carts. No one will notice. They never inspect them. I will crawl into one of the laundry bags and wait until someone pushes the carts outside. Yeah, that feels solid. No thirty–year sentence is going to keep me from the woman I
, want.
Chuckling under my breath, I snatch up a towel along with my toiletries. I wait to shower until nearly all of the other inmates are finishing up. The complete lack of privacy in the shower area makes my skin crawl. Humming softly, I lather myself with soap when the sudden silence feels wrong. I glance

around and realize I am completely alone. Perfect–now I can get myself off, using nothing but the image in my mind of Scar leaning forward, peering into the oven.
I wrap my hand around my half–hard cock and begin stroking it slowly. My eyelids fall shut, my head tipping back. A low groan escapes me as my grip slides rhythmically. The mental picture is incredibly sharp. Her dark hair cascades to one side. I imagine lifting the edge of her dress and seeing the delicate panties she has to be wearing. I don’t sense anyone behind me until it’s already too late. A body presses against mine, an arm snakes around me, and a blade is pressed tight to my throat. A
voice with a heavy Italian accent murmurs directly into my ear.
“Romero sends his regards–for Scar.” The knife cuts deep. My eyes fly open as blood pours from my neck. I clutch at my throat, desperately trying to stop the flow. Where the hell are the guards? I turn
slowly. A man dressed in a dark suit strolls cheerfully out of the shower room. I can feel my life
slipping away. No–this isn’t possible. I have plans. I need to see them through. My vision swims,
strength drains from my limbs. I collapse to the floor, and my final conscious thought is how the fuck
an Italian assassin manages to get into a prison just to kill me.
