Chapter 69
Milo’s POV
“I swear Scar nearly told us she loves us this morning,” I said to Jace.

He snapped his head toward me. “Hold up–how do you know? What were you even talking about that
got her that close?”
“Breakfast was done. She started clearing plates, Dylan was talking to her, and she suddenly got all
red–like, full–on blush.”
Jace’s eyes narrowed. “Why is she blushing because of Dylan? What did he say? Was he trying
something?”
I laughed under my breath. “If you let me actually finish, I’ll tell you.” His possessive side was coming
out hard.
He exhaled. “Fine. Keep going.”
“So I saw her blush and I reacted basically exactly like you just did. She teased me, asked if I was
jealous. I said yes–immediately.”
“And?”
“She stared at me like I’d grown a second head and went, how could I be jealous when I should know
how much she I… cares about me and you.”
Jace’s face shifted. “So she started to say ‘loves‘ and caught herself.”
“Yeah. And I don’t think she realized I noticed.” I leaned back, replaying it. “Her eyes went wide for a second–like she panicked–but then I mentioned how possessive I get and she latched onto that. I changed the subject to calm her down.”
I dragged a hand over my jaw. “I think she loves us, Jace. I also think she’s scared, and I get it. We’ve been proving she can be herself with us–no judgment. She told us she was taking this trip; she didn’t
ask for permission.”
I looked at him. “That means she’s trusting herself more. And she knows we’ll still be here when she
comes back. What else can we do?”
Jace didn’t answer right away. Then: “Could we talk to her dad?”
I blinked. “Her dad?”
“He has to be her emergency contact, right?” Jace said. “Think the Chief would give us the number?”

“We can ask. If he won’t… we can ask Gavin.”
Jace’s eyebrows lifted. “Because Gavin does his little ‘light hacking‘ thing.”
“Yeah,” I said. “He mentioned it at the bonfire.”
Got Meru
Jace snorted. “He also said that’s how he ended up modeling. Mugshot got out and the internet lost
its mind.”
“And he hacked the power company and wiped bills for low–income housing,” I added.
Jace stood like he’d already decided. “Let’s ask the Chief now. We’re off in an hour.”
The Chief stared at us like we’d asked for classified files.
“I’m sorry, what?” he said. “You want her emergency contact’s phone number?”
Jace tried to sound casual and failed. “So it is her father?”
“It is,” the Chief confirmed, then squinted. “But why do you want to call him? That’s… kinda strange.”
“We just want to ask him something,” Jace muttered.
The Chief’s mouth pulled into a knowing grin. “Ask him what?” His eyes sparkled with it–he already knew. “And are you planning to explain what you are to his daughter… and what you are to each
other?”
Jace looked at me, then back. “Should we? Or should Scar handle that part? I mean, Milo will be the one marrying her, so he’ll be the one asking permission.”
“Wait.” The Chief’s forehead creased. “Where does that leave you?”
“We’re doing a ceremony for us,” Jace said. “Then Milo and Scar make it legal.”
The Chief blinked once, then nodded slowly. “That’s actually pretty damn cool.” He sighed like he’d
lost the argument in his head. “Alright. I’ll give it to you only because I’ve got a soft spot for Scar. She deserves happy. And I want her staying in town, because Jesus, can that girl cook.”
Jace and I lit up.
The Chief handed it over. I typed the number in and hovered my thumb over the call button.
Before I could hit it, Jace leaned in. “What are you even going to say?”
“Shit.” I stared at the screen. “I don’t know. Introduce myself, obviously. And then… what? ‘Hi sir, I love

your daughter and want to marry her‘?”

Jace’s expression went flat. “You’ve known her six weeks. She’s been in Florida for two months. How do you think that conversation goes?”
I dropped my hand. “Then why the hell did we get his number?”
Jace looked down. “We got impulsive,” he admitted. “You told me she almost said she loved us and I- yeah. I got excited.”
“Same,” I said.
I shoved the phone away. “If her family comes for Thanksgiving, we meet them and charm the pants
off them. Then we wait a few weeks and ask if we can propose on Christmas or New Year’s.”
Jace pointed at me. “If he says yes.”
“Can you please be positive for five seconds?” I said. “They’re going to love us.”
Jace’s mood shifted, restless energy rolling in. “You want to call Gavin? See if he wants to hang?”
“I’m in.”
“I’ll go grab Dylan too,” Jace said. “Guys night.”
“Where?” I asked.
His grin went feral. “Thursday night football, baby.”
I groaned and rolled my eyes. He bled Dolphins. I was a 49ers guy.
“Fine,” I said. “I’ll buy the tickets.”
I called Gavin while Jace went hunting for Dylan.
“Yo, Hotstuff,” Gavin answered.
“Hotstuff?” I repeated.
“It’s what Maren calls you,” he said. “You’re Hotstuff, and Jace is Mr. Hottie.”
“That doesn’t bug you?”
“Why would it?” He sounded genuinely confused. “I’m secure enough to admit you two are good- looking. I still stare at my girls all the time.”

“Make sure you’re only staring,” I warned, “not using any other body part.”

He laughed. “Been there. Enjoyed myself. She enjoyed herself. But I’m off the market unless my woman says otherwise.”
My teeth clenched. Reminder received: this guy had been with my girl.
Why do I like him again? Because, against my better judgment, he’s not an asshole.
“Jace and I are going to the Dolphins game tonight,” I said. “He’s got season tickets–four seats.”
“Fuck yeah,” Gavin said. “I’m a huge Dolphins fan.”
“Five o’clock at my place.”
“See you then.”
I ended the call. Still a great guy, even if he’s had his dick in my girl.
Jace came back in. “Dylan’s down.”
“Gavin too. Told him five.”
We walked in at 4:30, and the house hit different without Scar’s energy in it.
Jace looked around like he expected her to step out of a room. “This feels weird.”
“It’s so weird,” I said. “How does five days flip everything? She hasn’t slept without us in five days, and
it already feels like we haven’t seen her in forever.”
I shook my head. “Am I really this whipped already?”
“If you are, I am,” Jace said. “Fuck. We’re in deep.” He opened his arms. “Come here.”
He always knew when I needed it.
His hug was solid, grounding. I held him just as tight.
“I miss her,” I admitted.
“Me too,” he said.
We showered fast–no time for anything else with company coming.
A knock hit the door the second we finished dressing. Jace opened it and Dylan and Gavin filled the
doorway.

Gavin’s mouth was already running.
“So,” he said to Dylan, “you’ve never hooked up with Natalie?”
Dylan shrugged. “Nah. Met Maren before I met Natalie. Otherwise I probably would’ve tried. What’s up, guys.”
Jace stared at Gavin. “Is there anyone you won’t fuck?”
Gavin spread his hands. “Just you three studs.” Then he grinned wider. “Although–group thing with our girls, and who knows.”
“The fuck is wrong with you?” I asked.
“Nothing,” he said, unfazed. “I like sex. My woman likes sex. And damn, she was a nice surprise.”
I shook my head, because what else do you do with Gavin.
Forty minutes later we rolled up to the stadium. Packed, loud, normal chaos. Getting to our seats took
forever.
Gavin tilted his head. “We could’ve just used my box.”
I looked at him. “You have a luxury box?”
“Yeah.” He shrugged. “But you said Jace had season tickets. I didn’t want to step on toes.”
“Next time, step,” Jace said immediately.
By halftime I was two sheets to the wind. Jace was somehow still sober, though he was demolishing
nachos like it was a competitive sport. Dylan and Gavin were right there with me on the drunk scale.
Good thing we took my truck–Jace could get all of us home.
A Taylor Swift song blasted through the stadium speakers and the alcohol made a decision for us.
Gavin, Dylan, and I started dancing like idiots. Jace stood in front of us “making it rain” with invisible
cash. We ended up on the Jumbotron.
The crowd went nuts.

Dylan and Gavin yanked their shirts off, so I said fuck it and pulled mine too. We swung them overhead like we were actually somebody.
Screaming everywhere.
“I feel like a rockstar!” Dylan yelled.
“We’re firefighters,” I shouted back. “We are rockstars!”
“I’m not,” Gavin yelled. “I’m just a model!”
“And a hacker!” Jace hollered.
“Yes!” Gavin screamed, pointing at him, beaming like a lunatic.
It was a perfect night.
Still–my chest ached anyway.
I pulled out my phone, shoved in close with the guys, snapped a selfie, and sent it to Scar.
Missing you pretty girl.
My Scar: Photo of the girls eating nachos and drinking margaritas.
You’re beautiful.
My Scar: Photo of Scar topless, striking a pose.
“Jesus,” I muttered.
Jace leaned in. “What? What happened?”
I angled the screen toward him and he snatched the phone out of my hand.
A ping.
His jaw dropped.
Then his phone pinged.
The sound he made told me he’d gotten the same thing.
I took my phone back and looked again. The inhale I sucked in was so sharp it made me cough.
My Scar: Wish you were here. Photo of Scar, butt ass naked on a bed, one leg straight up, the other bent in, her pussy and ass fully on display.

We needed to leave.
I needed Jace to suck me off.
Holy hell–how did we get this lucky?
