Scar’s POV
Dear Diary,
WELL, shit!
“I reached out to Jenson,” Natalie said, folding a stack of papers into a box. “He told me he needs to talk. He’s got my final paycheck, and I have to arrange selling the furniture. After that, we should get out of here-late tonight or first thing in the morning. I’ll drive you and Maren to the airport, and then Summer, Maisie, and I will start the drive.”
“Got it,” I said. “Do you want someone to tag along?”
“No. I’m good.”
I nodded and kept packing, sliding the last of her books and office stuff into a tote.
Natalie snapped the lid on a box. “I’m going to see Mama Cici. I texted her that I’m in town for the day. She promised she won’t say a word to Brennan. We’re meeting at Brew & Book.”
“Tell her I said hi,” I said.
Natalie grinned at the room. “Ladies, while Sav and I are gone, pretend you live here. And if you’re going to have sex, record it so we can watch later.”
Everyone cracked up-though Summer and Maisie traded a look that absolutely wasn’t innocent.
I glanced between them. “Did you two ever reach out to Daxter? He’s sweet, huge, and I’m pretty sure he knows exactly what he’s doing.”
“He’s also ridiculously hot,” Summer said. “That photo you sent? The man in a suit is a public service.”
Maisie leaned forward, eyes bright. “We did. We called him the day after you gave us his number. And his voice? Criminal. So deep. He also said you told him we were looking for a third. Be honest-can he handle us?”
“He can,” I said. “And he was bidding on me. He leaned in and told me he and his friends would take very good care of me.”
Summer’s eyebrows jumped. “Friends?”
“If you play it right,” I said, “you might end up meeting them too.”

Summer winked at Maisie. Maisie tossed her a kiss.
“Honestly, you two,” I muttered, laughing. “Okay. I’m heading out. Maren, love you-keep them
contained.”
I escaped through a chorus of giggles. My U-er pulled up about five minutes later and had me at the coffee shop fifteen minutes after that.
Inside, Mama Cici was already posted at a table near the back, waving like she’d been waiting all day
just to see me.
“Oh, Scar,” she said the second I reached her. “Look at you. Beautiful. Happy. That smile-where has that been hiding? Turn around. Let me see you. Twirl.”
I spun for her, and she clapped like I’d just performed on a stage.
Knee-high brown boots, black fleece leggings, a brown corduroy skirt, and a cream sweater-nothing
fancy, but she acted like I’d walked in wearing a crown.
“So pretty,” she declared, then leaned in. “Now. Start talking. Are you working? Did you make friends? Any cute boys?” She wiggled her brows.
I snorted. “I’m a chef at a fire station.”
Her hand flew to her chest. “Ohhh, a fire station. Hubba, hubba.”
“Exactly,” I said, grinning. “And yes, I’ve made friends-my girls are here with me. They’re helping Natalie pack up. She’s moving to Florida too.”
“That’s where you ran off to?”
“Yep.” I hesitated, then pushed forward anyway. “And… I’ve met two men. They make me really happy. They’re firefighters. They treat me so well, Mama Cici. They actually understand me-what I need. They don’t demand anything from me. They take care of me, and I can be myself around them. They’ve shown me a different way to live, and I’ve really liked it.”
Her face softened. “That’s what I want for you. Happiness.”
“Even if it means I’m nowhere near Brennan?”
“Yes,” she said without flinching. “He ruined it, Scar. I thought he might fix what he broke, but… seeing you like this? That’s not happening. I’ve never seen you this alive. Not even on your wedding day. You were happy then, sure-but this is something else. And I love this version of you.”
My throat tightened. “Thank you. You don’t know how much I needed to hear that.”

She sat up straighter, businesslike. “Okay. Show me these young men.”
I pulled out my phone and scrolled to photos of Jace and Milo.
Mama Cici made a noise that was half laugh, half prayer. “Jesus, Scar. Is this what Florida is stocked
with? Maybe I should relocate.”
I stared at her. “You?”
“What?” she said, offended. “I’m fifty, not dead.”
I blinked. “I thought after Gareth died you were done dating.”
“I was done dating men who weren’t worth the trouble,” she corrected. “I had a son to raise. And then! wanted a little peace.”
“I get that.”
She tapped my phone gently with one finger. “Do you love them?”
“I don’t know yet,” I admitted. “It feels too soon. I’ve only been in Florida two months. And technically
we’ve only been dating a week. Though I’ve known this one longer.” I pointed at Milo.
“And when you say both of them make you happy…” Her tone shifted, careful but curious. “They share
you?”
“We’re a throuple,” I said. “Like a couple, but three people. We’re committed to each other-only each
other.”
Her eyes widened. “So they’re together too?”
“Yes,” I said, suddenly shy.
“Wow,” she breathed, staring at the screen like it might start moving.
“Mama Cici,” I said, laughing. “You’re imagining it, aren’t you?”
She flushed red and began fanning herself with her hand. “Lord, child. Lucky you.”
We fell apart laughing right there at the table.
It was-honestly-such a good visit.
Then she leaned in. “Come to dinner tonight. You and your girls. Brennan shouldn’t be there. He vanishes every weekend. I think he’s seeing someone, but he isn’t ready for me to meet her.”
“He’s not with Sloane?”

“God, no.” Mama Cici’s voice turned sharp. “He knows I’d disown him. He can’t stand her. She tried to
baby-trap him.”
“Yes, please,” she said, patting my cheek. “Thank you.”
them. Goodbye.”
I got into the U-er and pulled my phone out with shaky fingers.
“Hey, beautiful,” Milo answered.
“Hi,” I said softly. “Is Jace with you?”
“Yeah,” Milo said. “You’re on speaker.”
Jace’s voice came through right after. “Hi, Princess.”
“I miss you both so much,” I blurted.
“We miss you too,” Jace said. “What’s going on? You sound… quiet.”
“I was with Mama Cici,” I said, staring out the window. “And when I left, I ran into Brennan. I’m sorry. Nothing happened. We said hello, and he asked me to go to dinner so we could talk. I said no. But I’m still sorry.”
“Hey,” Jace said, steady as always. “You’re fine. You didn’t do anything wrong. Take a deep breath for
me.”

“Good,” he said. “Milo and I aren’t upset. We’re proud of you. I know seeing him had to be hard.
“It wasn’t,” I admitted. “I didn’t feel anything except gullt for talking to him.”
“You don’t need to feel guilty,” Milo said.
“And thank you for telling us,” Jace added. “You don’t have to report in every time your ex shows up.”
“I know,” I said. “I just… I don’t want secrets between us. Ever.”
“Thank you, Scar,” they said together.
Jace’s voice softened. “When are you coming home? We miss you.”
“Tomorrow morning,” I said. “Early. Natalie’s driving me and Maren to the airport. We fly home, and Maisie and Summer are riding back with Natalie. We’re having dinner with Mama Cici tonight. She said
Brennan won’t be there.”
“Even if he shows up,” Milo said, “don’t stress. We’ve got you.”
“Okay.” My shoulders eased. “The flight leaves at six a.m. Can you pick us up? Maybe call Gavin too?”
“Absolutely,” Milo said. “We’ll be there.”
“Thanks,” I said. “I should go. I miss you.”
“We miss you,” Milo said. “And those pictures you sent? Gorgeous.
“Stunning,” Jace agreed. “Absolutely.”
I giggled, told them bye, and ended the call still smiling.
I really do have the best boyfriends.
