Chapter 135: True Identity
“She is my—” Arthur began, attempting to assert his claim.
But before he could finish, Chloe cut in sharply, “Ex. That’s the only link we share.”
A ripple of surprise spread among the guests nearby. So, this sturdy woman was just an ex? Then who was the woman who had been clinging to Arthur’s arm all evening? Was she the current girlfriend? The ex? The mystery deepened.
Joseph frowned at the mention of “ex.” His eyes instinctively flicked toward Eugene, then he cleared his throat and spoke with a serious tone, “If she’s your ex, that means your relationship is truly over?”
Arthur hesitated, searching for words. He and Chloe were not just broken up—they were divorced, a final severing far beyond a simple breakup.
“Obviously,” Chloe said coldly, her voice sharp and unwavering. “There’s no connection left between us.” She fixed Arthur with a piercing gaze. “So, Mr. Myers, I’m confused. How can you throw around accusations without knowing the facts? Isn’t that unfair?” A mocking laugh escaped her lips. “No matter how wealthy your family is, you should understand that slander has consequences.”
“Chloe, you—” Arthur started, but she cut him off.
“Hold on,” Landon interrupted, stepping forward with a patronizing smile as he gave Arthur a condescending pat on the shoulder. “Tell me, where do you get the arrogance to act like Ms. Lewis can’t survive without you?”
Arthur stiffened, quickly shrugging off Landon’s hand and shooting him a glare. “Who exactly are you?”
Landon cleared his throat softly, adopting a serious demeanor. “I’m Landon Voss. And just so we’re clear,” he said, deliberately stretching the last word, his voice dropping an octave as he locked eyes with Arthur, “I happen to be Ms. Lewis’s current… boss.”
The word “current” hit Arthur like a punch to the gut. His fist clenched tightly, nearly flying up in anger.
Boss? Chloe’s boss?
Arthur’s brow furrowed deeply. He refused to accept it. Since when did Chloe have a job?
“What nonsense is this? There’s no way—”
Landon laughed quietly. Just then, Virginia and Mark approached. Mark recognized Landon immediately and greeted him with respectful warmth. “Mr. Voss.”
“Well, well, someone actually knows me,” Landon said with a sly grin, casting a mocking glance at Arthur. “Why don’t you properly introduce me to this… man?”
Mark stepped forward and addressed Arthur directly. “Arthur, you really don’t know who this is?” He sighed dramatically, feigning disappointment.
Yet, no one from Cosmos’s upper management had ever been met—until now. The person in charge was right here.
And the most surprising part? He had just claimed to be Chloe’s boss.
Did Chloe work for Cosmos Group? Or was she employed privately by this “Mr. Voss”?
What exactly was her role?
“Mr. Voss, I didn’t expect to see you at this event,” Mark said with an ingratiating smile, sneaking another glance at Arthur. “Would you be available for drinks after the auction?”
“That’s all he’s good at—throwing around accusations,” Landon laughed openly, showing Arthur no respect. Then, turning to the gathered crowd, he formally introduced Chloe.
“Everyone, this is Chloe Lewis, a designer we specially recruited for the LOVE brand under Cosmos Group. Her work is about to be officially launched.” Landon raised his voice so every guest could hear. “I’m sure you’ve all noticed her gown tonight. It’s from one of the collections our LOVE brand is about to reveal!”
The room buzzed with whispered excitement as Chloe stood quietly, a faint blush coloring her cheeks, her eyes steady and proud despite the sudden spotlight.
