**Chapter 299: The Broken Promise**
“Right. So, where is Chloe? She insisted that every board member be present today, and yet here we are, waiting for her to arrive. This is unacceptable.”
“Regardless of her presence, shouldn’t the Lewis Group make the official announcement regarding her appointment as executive director?”
“Mr. Lewis, we require your guidance. What should our next step be?”
The atmosphere in the room shifted palpably as all eyes turned toward Scott, anticipating his response. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, a voice pierced through the tension from the doorway.
“Do you really need to deliberate over something so straightforward?”
At the sound of Chloe’s voice, the collective gaze of the board members snapped toward the entrance. Chloe stepped inside with an air of calm assurance, her presence commanding the room. Her eyes scanned the faces before settling on Scott, who sat at the head of the table, flanked by Monique and Ernesto.
“I apologize for the delay,” she said, her tone measured and composed. “I was busy verifying the Lewis Group’s data from the past six months. It appears some project reports are still referencing figures from three years ago.” She paused, allowing the weight of her words to settle in the air. “I have to ask—was anyone here aware of this?”
The shareholders were momentarily paralyzed, caught off guard by her unexpected revelation.
Scott felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He had been aware that the company was facing challenges, but he had chosen to remain blissfully ignorant of the finer details. As chairman, his focus had always been on the results, not the nitty-gritty paperwork.
Those specifics were meant to be the responsibility of the department heads. But now, with Chloe shining a spotlight on them, he could no longer evade accountability.
Chloe raised her phone, displaying the Lewis Group’s official account for all to see.
“Where’s your announcement? The online crisis has subsided. I expected you to uphold your end of the bargain.” A faint smile danced on her lips, but it did little to soften the gravity of her words.
Her tone remained courteous, yet every syllable echoed with undeniable authority.
Nervous glances were exchanged among the board members. Chloe was directly reminding them of the commitments made in this very room, and it was high time they delivered.
“Mr. Lewis, the evidence is clear. What is causing the holdup?” Chloe raised an eyebrow, her expression challenging. “Or are you planning to renege on your promise and act like a complete jerk?”
“We… we wouldn’t bully you,” Monique mumbled awkwardly, hastily reclaiming her seat.
This little witch. Just wait.
She had nearly fallen into Chloe’s trap. Thank goodness she had caught herself before saying too much.
“The esteemed Lewis Group, filled with all these influential individuals, reneging on their word. No wonder you’ve been bleeding money for so long,” Chloe remarked slowly, her sarcasm dripping from every word.
Her bluntness left them momentarily speechless. They could only sit in frustrated silence, grappling with their inability to counter her claims.
“Mr. Lewis, you’re the chairman. You must uphold your commitments! Or are you going to follow their lead, trying to wriggle out of the deal?”
Chloe’s gaze swept across the room before finally locking onto Scott, her eyes unwavering.
Her lips curled into a cool, composed smile. “Who was it that swore that if public sentiment turned in my favor, you’d announce my position as the vice president of Lewis Group?”
