**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
**Chapter 324: Web of Deceit**
Monique fought against the heaviness of her limbs, propping herself up in bed with a sense of urgency coursing through her veins. She didn’t bother to cover herself, her eyes locking onto Ernesto with a frantic intensity. “Ernesto, you won’t believe it. Scott dashed out of the manor just an hour ago. He claimed he was heading to the office, but I suspect he’s planning to help Chloe.”
“Help Chloe?” Ernesto echoed, his brow furrowing, a hint of incredulity lacing his tone.
“Yes! I can feel it. Scott looked genuinely worried. I think he’s going to meddle in this situation. He might even pull some strings behind the scenes to support her!” Monique’s voice grew more frantic, her agitation palpable. “If he dares to lend a hand to that girl, I promise he’ll regret it.”
Ernesto let out a derisive snort, a smirk playing at the corners of his lips. “Let him try. Does he even have the means to do anything substantial? The Lewis Group is currently grappling with a serious cash-flow crisis. Even as chairman, Scott can’t just conjure up a billion in liquid assets out of thin air. If he attempts to leverage his shares, he won’t just face me—other shareholders will rise against him as well.”
Monique’s eyes widened as she processed his words. “You mean…?”
“Scott is powerless in this situation. If he decides to assist that little witch Chloe, the board could very well vote to strip him of his chairmanship,” Ernesto replied, his voice dripping with cold amusement. “If Scott wishes to retain his position, he’ll think twice about intervening. At best, he might just ask Arthur to step in. But even if Arthur were inclined to help, do you think Chloe would accept it?”
Monique fell silent for a moment, her mind racing as she considered Ernesto’s words. A flicker of understanding crossed her face.
“Heh, if that girl were truly willing to accept Arthur’s help, she wouldn’t have orchestrated this negotiation on her own. She’s painted herself into a corner this time,” she mused, a cruel smile creeping across her lips. “Let’s see how she wriggles out of this mess. If she attempts to fund it all herself, do you really think the shareholders will stand idly by?”
Ernesto nodded, his expression darkening as he recalled the stakes. Arthur had indeed shown willingness to invest two billion into Lewis Group, yet Chloe remained obstinate, refusing to collaborate with Myers Group. If that capital didn’t materialize, Lewis Group would find itself in a liquidity crisis within mere weeks.
The clock was ticking, and if the situation remained unresolved, Chloe could very well find herself ousted from her position. She had boasted publicly about her ability to turn Lewis Group around in just a month. No one had forced her to make such a bold declaration. If negotiations fell apart within hours without securing a new partner, the company’s stock would nosedive.
And when that happened, the shareholders would not hold back their wrath.
Well, Monique certainly had her own appeal; otherwise, he wouldn’t have kept her around all these years.
“You’re so bad, Ernesto… making it so intense like that,” the woman said, forcing a smile as she hurriedly began to dress.
Ernesto’s desire flared once more as he reached for her, but she deftly pulled away, a teasing glint in her eye.
“Finish your business first, then come find me. I have to go! Consider those shoes and the coat you just bought me as my parting gift to you,” she said with a faint smile, slipping her hand into his pocket and retrieving a credit card. She kissed it playfully, winked, and then turned on her heel, hurrying away barefoot.
As he watched her leave, a dark shadow crossed Ernesto’s eyes, a storm of thoughts brewing within him. The web of deceit was tightening, and he was determined to see it through to the end.
