**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
**Chapter 378: The Police Arrive**
If they thought they could walk away unchallenged, they were sorely mistaken. Chloe felt a fire ignite within her, a fierce determination that surged through her veins. A dangerous glint flickered in her eyes as she clenched her fists tightly, her gaze locked on the smug expressions plastered across Carolyn and Monique’s faces. For a fleeting moment, the urge to charge at them, to silence their taunts once and for all, consumed her thoughts.
But just as she teetered on the edge of that impulse, a warm hand grasped her wrist, gently yet firmly pulling her back from the brink. She looked up, her heart racing, to find Eugene standing resolutely beside her.
His grip was steady, reassuring. The moment their eyes met, the seething rage that had been boiling within her began to simmer down, replaced by a flicker of clarity.
“I have a little gift for you,” Eugene whispered, his voice low and meant only for her ears. “Hope you like it.”
Before Chloe could voice her curiosity, the heavy sound of authoritative footsteps resonated through the hall, echoing ominously off the walls. A contingent of uniformed police officers strode into the venue, their presence commanding immediate attention.
Even the police?
The crowd instinctively parted, creating a clear path for the newcomers, the atmosphere thick with tension.
The officers moved with purpose, and the one in charge stepped forward, his voice cutting through the murmurs. “Who is Monique Lynn?”
At the sound of her name, Monique flinched, her body tensing involuntarily. She didn’t respond; instead, her eyes darted around the room, desperately searching for Ernesto amidst the sea of faces.
Her gaze flicked toward him, an unspoken plea etched across her features, but he could only offer a faint, almost imperceptible shake of his head—a silent warning urging her to remain calm.
Monique took a deep breath, steeling herself against the chaos that threatened to engulf her. The situation was already spiraling out of control, and she knew she had to make Scott pay for what he had done. So what if the police had arrived? Adultery was hardly a criminal offense.
Was this some sort of scare tactic? Did they truly believe she was so easily deceived?
“That’s me,” Monique retorted, her voice dripping with disdain as she straightened her posture, projecting an air of defiance.
The lead officer advanced towards her, holding out an official document with a serious expression. “Ms. Monique Lynn, you are under investigation for suspicion of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, attempted murder, and related charges. You need to accompany us to the station.”
“What?” Monique exclaimed, incredulity flooding her features. “Have you all lost your minds? Me? Attempted murder? That’s the most ridiculous accusation I’ve ever heard! If you’re here about the affair, fine, I’ll admit to that. But this? This is utterly absurd!”
It was only then that her eyes truly focused on the document in his hand. An arrest warrant.
An arrest warrant for her. This couldn’t be happening.
“What absolute nonsense are you spouting?” Monique shot back, her voice rising in pitch, laced with panic. “What death? What disappearance? Twenty years ago? I have no idea what you’re talking about!”
“You are free to deny the charges. Save your explanations for the court,” the officer replied flatly, his demeanor unyielding. He nodded to the officer beside him, who promptly produced a pair of handcuffs.
“Don’t you dare touch me!” Monique shrieked, stepping back as fear coursed through her. “This is slander! I’ll sue you! Chloe, this is your little game, isn’t it? You really will stop at nothing, will you?”
Chloe watched Monique’s revolting display unfold, her voice icy and unwavering. “Monique, I have always believed you were responsible for my mother’s death. For years, I lacked the evidence. Now, it has been found. If I don’t see you behind bars today, my name isn’t Chloe Lewis.”
At that moment, Bruce slowly ascended the steps to the stage, his expression cold and resolute as he fixed his gaze on Monique. He raised his phone, tapping the screen with a deliberate motion. “Perhaps this will refresh your memory,” he said, and a recording began to play, filling the air with an unsettling truth.
