“What?” Mateo’s voice shot up. “What the hell is Frank thinking? Why’s he jumping into this mess? The annual dividends on 5% alone are massive. How could he just give that up?”

“Five percent, plus the fifty–one–this…”

“Stop doing the math. It’s fifty–six percent.” Zachary flashed a charming smile. “Ms. Lewis is now the majority shareholder of Myers Group. Next time you want to stir up public opinion, maybe run it by her first.”

The Myers Group executives exchanged dark looks. Moments ago, they’d been standing with Arthur, ready for him to take control. Now, with notarized documents in hand, it felt like the rug had been pulled out from under them.

“So what if it’s notarized?” Jennifer’s laugh was sharp. “So what if she holds a hundred percent? The public’s already turned against Myers Group. The news that Chloe’s child isn’t Arthur’s is about to spread through every reporter outside waiting for that press conference. Chloe will be crucified in the court of public opinion.”

She jabbed a finger in Chloe’s direction. “Even if she holds every share, she won’t keep them. Myers Group will collapse under her. You can all go down with her.” Jennifer yanked her hand away from Arthur. ‘Arthur. Are you really going to watch everything you built get destroyed by this woman? Say something.”

Arthur’s jaw tightened as he looked at her.

‘Arthur. This is the woman you’ve always felt guilty about. Turns out, you’re the one who should have been angry all along.” Jennifer’s voice dripped with contempt. “Since you can’t fight for our child’s future, then fine–this baby doesn’t need to exist. I’m going to the hospital right now.” She spun around to leave.

“Jennifer.” Arthur grabbed her arm, pulling her back. “Don’t do this.”

“Don’t do this?” Tears streamed down her face, her voice rising to a wail. “You can’t even make a simple decision. How am I supposed to feel safe with you? How is this baby supposed to feel safe?”

The executives who’d supported Jennifer moments ago now shot Chloe even darker looks.

Arthur watched Jennifer cry, guilt twisting in his chest. What had he done wrong? Why was everything falling apart? He just wanted his family to be okay. But where was his family now?

His mother was in prison. Ifis father was gone. He still couldn’t accept that his mother had killed his father, and now this–Chloe’s child wasn’t his.

Jennifer clutched his hand, eyes wet. “Arthur. What am I supposed to do now?”

“What are you supposed to do?” Zachary cut in before Arthur could answer. He snorted. Jennifer. Did you think about consequences at all when you were setting all this up? You’re pregnant. Aren’t you worried that child might come out with something wrong?”
