Chapter 546 Pretends to Be Sick

This kind of restraint had been Eugene’s pattern lately, and Jennifer was getting tired of it. He was right there in front of her, always keeping that gentlemanly distance, never actually touching her skin. What she wanted was to push things further–to make him drop the act, get close, make it just the two of them.
One time. That was all it would take. After that, she’d have him completely. And the real Chloe? She’d have nothing left to come back to.
“Eugene.” She looked up at him, her gaze steady. “It’s okay. Will you kiss me?”
Eugene froze for a second at the request. He just stared at the woman in his arms.
From the first moment he’d had to touch her, he’d felt it–a disgust so strong it made him want to shove her away. It was like an allergy. Even light contact, barely there, was enough to set it off.
Who was this woman?
The feeling was that strong. He looked at her now, eyes closed, waiting. And for a moment, even Eugene- always in control–didn’t know what to do.
The silence stretched. He couldn’t put it off much longer. His hand tensed, veins rising. He was about to drop the act, grab her by the throat, and demand to know where Chloe was.
Then, from downstairs, a voice cut through.
“Mr. Rosewood! Robert’s crying!”
The sound pulled him back. The woman in his arms leaned in, rising on her toes. But Eugene pulled away a beat before she could reach him.
“What happened?” His voice sharp with concern, he turned and headed downstairs fast.
Jennifer stood there, watching him walk away. She’d felt it–his presence, that intoxicating scent. One more second and she’d have had him.
But no.
That little bastard Robert. What now? Crying in the middle of the night?
Something flickered across her face. She pushed it down, rearranged her expression into worry, and followed.
“Robert!” Eugene was the first through the bedroom door. Inside, Robert sat up in bed, still in his pajamas, face flushed and streaked with tears.
The moment he saw Eugene, he let out another wail.

“I feel sick!”
“Robert, what’s wrong?” Jennifer hurried in behind Eugene, her face the picture of concern. She moved toward the bed, saw Robert, and hesitated. Before she could get closer, Eugene held her back

“You just got over being sick. Your immune system’s still weak. Don’t get near him.” His voice was firm. ‘Looks like an allergic reaction.”
She looked again. Robert’s whole body was flushed, covered in raised red rashes.
“He just started crying out of nowhere, Mr. Rosewood,” a member of the house staff said from the doorway, worried. “Should we call an ambulance?”
“I feel sick! I’m gonna throw up!” Robert lurched forward, toward her.
Eugene blocked her, stepping forward and catching Robert in his arms.
I’m taking him to the hospital. You stay here and rest. He glanced back at her. “It’s cold out. You’re not well. Don’t come.”
Jennifer reached for him, but he was already moving, carrying Robert out the door. She stood there. watching them go. She wanted to follow, but he’d said it himself–her ‘condition” meant she couldn’t. So she just watched him leave.
That little monster. Having an allergic reaction–why couldn’t he just drop dead?
she was so close. One more minute and she’d have had the footage. One more minute. And then this.
nn it.

She was running out of time. Two days until the wedding. She had to figure something out. Fast.
