cacy, Rose: Making Him Regret Everything
Chapter 549 Shares a Lead
Finished
Eugene almost laughed at himself. What was he doing, getting all worked up over something so small?
Realizing how ridiculous he was being, he just said flatly, “I’m good. Thanks. He never ate street food anyway. But then a memory surfaced–him and Chloe, hitting up a food truck together once. The thought hit him harder than he expected.
For a second, warmth flickered through his chest. Then he remembered Chloe was God knows where, in God knows what kind of situation, and the anger came roaring back.
“Come on, just try one. This one’s actually really good.” Robert held out a skewer, persistent.
Eugene looked at the kid’s face–earnest, waiting–and the rage settled. Maybe it was impossible to stay angry around someone that innocent.
Robert kept his hand out, like he wasn’t going to give up.
Eugene didn’t say anything. He just walked over, pulled up a chair, sat down, and took the skewer. Stared at t for a second. Then bit into it.
t was just street food, but the flavor was surprisingly solid. No wonder kids loved this stuff.
He took another bite, then looked up at Robert. Voice low. “You ate. Now talk. What’d you find?”
He’d had Bruce put dozens of people on this. They’d turned up nothing useful. And now this kid was aying he had a lead. Was that a challenge to his competence or just an insult?
He needed to know what Robert had.
Robert finished his skewer, set it down, and got serious. “I found something. Not sure if it’s solid yet. Still racking it.”
He stood, walked over to the couch, and dug through the small bag Bruce had brought earlier. Pulled out a ablet, tapped around for a second, then handed it to Eugene..
Eugene glanced at the screen. Casual at first. Then his whole face changed. He snatched the tablet out of Robert’s hand.
On screen was a photo. Some kind of island. A beachside shack selling drinks. And a figure sanibing reaching for a cup.
Only the back was visible, just a sliver of a profile But Eugene knew in one look
Chlor His Chloe.
His grip on the tablet tightened. His eyes went cold
“Where is this?”
Robert met his gaze. Serious now
