Chapter 590 The First Task
The room was softly lit, with only a single candle flickering on a corner table.

The dining table was laid out generously–plates of food still steaming, clearly fresh from the kitchen.
Everything was quiet, with no one in sight. The guard had said Vincent was inside, so where…
Chloe lifted her gaze toward the kitchen. The door was shut, but a strip of light glowed from underneath.
She moved toward it. Just as she raised her hand to push the door open, it swung inward first.
Vincent stood there dressed casually, a floral apron tied around his waist. In one hand, he held a freshly prepared dish; in the other, a spatula–as though he’d just finished plating up.
When his eyes met hers, he smiled. “You’re back.”
Chloe studied him, unsure what he was playing at.
“Have a seat. I’ll be right out–just one more soup to go.” Without waiting for a reply, he turned back to the
stove.
Chloe lingered in the doorway until Vincent gently urged her to wait in the living room–the kitchen was cramped, he said, and the smell of cooking oil might cling to her clothes.
Seeing how seriously he was taking this, Chloe didn’t argue. She quietly returned to the living room.
Under the candlelight, the table looked almost intimate. But to Chloe, it felt staged–nice, maybe, but nothing special.
A few minutes later, Vincent emerged with another dish. He set it down carefully, then fetched a bottle of red wine and opened it himself.
“What do you think? Try a bit,” he said, pouring a glass for Chloe before taking his seat. Only then did he seem to notice he was still wearing the apron.
“Sorry, I’m not really used to this kind of thing. But for you, I’m willing to learn.” He untied the apron neatly, and his usual polished composure returned as he settled into his chair.
Gesturing toward the spread, he said earnestly, “It’s been a long day. You must be hungry. Go ahead–1 made all of this for you.”
Chloe glanced at the food. “I’m not hungry. But thanks.”
Vincent’s expression cooled. He watched as she didn’t so much as look at the dishes again before rising to leave.
His mood soured. Her attitude was too much.
He’d put time and effort into all of this.
“Chloe.”

She had just reached the door when his voice, tense with irritation, stopped her. She paused but didn’t turn around.
“I’m not happy with how you’re acting. I agreed to let you attend Charles‘ funeral, and I didn’t interfere with whatever you needed to do.” Vincent’s tone lowered. “Involving the Binghams was already a concession. You know I wasn’t happy about not going with you.”
He had wanted to accompany her to the funeral–she’d refused outright.
