He Cheated I Rose Making Him Regret Everything (Chloe and Arthur) novel Chapter 662

"Ugh, it just ticks me off. Of all the rotten people out there, we had to bump into one of them!" Oralia grumbled under her breath.

Eugene overheard her muttering and couldn't help but smile. The world was full of all sorts—you never knew who you'd run into.

"You all right?"

A concerned voice pulled his attention. Chloe had been walking quietly beside him, and when he glanced over, he saw worry etched in her eyes. Her gaze kept drifting back to his injured hand.

"I'm fine, really. Don't stress about it." Eugene leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a murmur meant only for her.

What he said next made Chloe freeze in her tracks. She stood completely still, as if her feet had taken root right there on the path.

A deep blush spread across her cheeks. They were near the coastline, and the salty breeze swept strands of hair across her face.

Oralia noticed Chloe had stopped moving. Eugene and Robert were already several steps ahead—Robert had even reached up to hold Eugene's hand.

"Hey, Chloe, what's up? Your face is totally red," Oralia said, tilting her head. "What did Eugene say to you?"

Before Chloe could answer, Melinda looped an arm around Oralia's shoulders and steered her forward.

"Since when are you the gossip patrol? Mind your own business," Melinda teased, nudging her along. "Come on, we've got plenty to handle today."

"Who are you calling a gossip? You're the same age as me, you know!"

Chloe watched the two of them bicker, still rooted in place. She lifted a hand to her cheek—it felt warm under her touch.

That Eugene... always picking the worst moments. Just minutes ago they were in a life-or-death situation, and now here he was, whispering things that made her heart race.

Really... why did he have to go and say something like that?

The memory of his words—about not letting her leave the bed for three days—flashed in her mind, and her cheeks burned even hotter.

That jerk.

Her eyes drifted ahead to where Eugene and Robert walked side by side, hand in hand—the tall figure and the small one, moving in sync.

It was a tender scene. For a moment, she pictured herself there too: Eugene on Robert's left, holding his hand, and herself on his right. The three of them, like a real family, strolling together as the sun set.

A flicker of red light cut across her vision.

Chloe stiffened.

They weren't near the shore yet, and the sun was still high.
