"Mr. Prescott."
Before Pierce could pull himself out of his suffocating jealousy, someone called his name.
Seeing who it was, he pressed his index finger to his lips, gesturing for silence, then pointed toward the stairwell.
As Felix Fuller followed him inside, he pulled the heavy door shut behind them.
Pierce lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, and his cheeks hollowed out slightly as his brows knitted together in a tight, dark scowl.
He tilted his head, exhaling a thick plume of smoke, and asked in a low voice, "What did you find?"
Felix hesitated, looking like he was struggling to find the right words.
He had been working for Pierce for three years. Pierce had hand-picked him. Though technically his assistant, Pierce had been grooming him for an executive VP role.
Felix was incredibly thorough and famously stoic. The fact that he came all the way here in person instead of just making a phone call meant this was massive.
Pierce had braced himself the moment he saw Felix.
But actually forcing the words out still sent a sharp sting through his chest. "Tell me. Who is the child's father?"
Felix paused for a long moment before finally speaking. "Caspian Quincy, the head of the Harlow Group."
The name meant absolutely nothing to Pierce. It was so unfamiliar it didn't even register a blip in his memory.
His scowl deepened. "What does he do?"
"Construction materials. The company's scale is nowhere near Prescott Enterprises, but he built it from the ground up. He's young, and he's been doing pretty well for himself. Except..."
"Except what?"
"At the end of the year before last, you ordered the aggressive acquisition of several mid-sized companies. The Harlow Group was one of them."
Pierce scoffed disdainfully. "A nobody."
"True," Felix said. "But I looked him up, and... he's a very good-looking guy."
Pierce took another drag of his cigarette, slowly blowing out the smoke. His face was an unreadable mask. "She doesn't base her choices on looks."
