Caspian choked on his words, his Adam's apple bobbing sharply. "Stop wasting your time on me. Find a good man and marry him."
"Caspian!" Stella completely broke down, crying out, "You promised to treat me well for the rest of our lives!"
Watching Stella sob until she could barely catch her breath, Seraphina felt as if a massive hole had been torn open in her own chest.
It dragged her straight back to three years ago, when she had learned of Pierce's sudden disappearance. She had cried exactly like this—screaming, terrified, entirely unable to comprehend or accept reality.
She knew exactly how agonizing it felt to be abandoned by your entire world. She knew the suffocating torment of being wildly in love one second, only to be violently discarded the next.
But Stella was slightly luckier. At least she had gotten an answer. Even if it was a lie, it provided a definitive end.
But what about her?
Pierce had severed every single connection they had. She didn't even get a single word of explanation.
Taking a deep breath to suppress the rising ache, Seraphina stepped forward and gently patted Stella's shoulder. Her voice was soothing. "Stella, don't cry just yet. It's not what you think. We'll get everything straightened out, okay?"
Stella looked up, her tear-drenched eyes clinging to Seraphina like a lifeline, brimming with helpless confusion. "Dr. Somerset, do you two... really have a baby?"
Seraphina shot a glacial glare at Caspian, kicked him hard in the leg, and commanded coldly, "Come with me for a second."
Sluggishly, Caspian stood up and trailed after her into the study.
"What do you want?" he grumbled, his tone dripping with impatience. "Don't try to pull some TV mediator crap on me. It makes me sick."
