Just as Seraphina's thoughts drifted, a shrill, piercing fire alarm erupted outside the villa.
*Beep—Beep—*
The frantic, deafening siren slashed through the night, instantly shattering the quiet both inside and out.
Her heart dropped. Instinctively, she stood and hurried to the window, pulling back a corner of the curtain. There were no flames visible outside, no sign of smoke anywhere, yet the alarm kept blaring. It clearly wasn't a real fire.
She frowned, a sharp sense of vigilance rising in her chest.
This was almost certainly intentional.
Downstairs, Caspian and Stella had also been startled by the noise, their conversation coming to an abrupt halt.
Caspian immediately tensed, shoving Stella behind him and glaring warily toward the front door.
As Seraphina hurried down the stairs, she overheard him asking Stella in a low voice, "Did anyone follow you here?"
Stella looked completely lost. "I didn't even know what was going on with you when I drove over. I wasn't paying attention..."
"You can't hide from what's coming," Seraphina said. "Whoever it is chose to pull the fire alarm instead of just breaking in. There's probably not that many of them."
Caspian had already picked up the baseball bat from the floor, entirely shifting into combat mode, ready for a fight.
Stella had never been in a situation like this before. She was still just a young woman, and she clung to Caspian's arm like a terrified deer, completely panicked.
Caspian's eye was still swollen shut, and he was forced to grip the bat with one hand. He was clearly running on fumes.
Seraphina sighed softly. "Both of you stay put and keep calm. I'll go check it out."
"Are you out of your mind?" Caspian hissed furiously. "You don't even know how many people are out there. Do you want to die?"
