Seraphina slowly opened her eyes and took in the unfamiliar surroundings.
This place was definitely right in the heart of the city. Through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, the bustling city lights stretched out endlessly into the night.
The interior was decorated in a stark, minimalist black and white, giving off a cold, rigid vibe.
It was painfully obvious that a man lived here.
When Pierce walked out and saw she was awake, he said softly, "Rest for a bit. Once the water is ready, I'll give you a bath."
"Is this your new place?" she asked, her tone flat.
"You could say that," he replied. "You'll be living here from now on. I'll contact your superiors and explain the situation. You're on medical leave to recover. You won't be going to work for a while."
She looked up at him, her eyes turning into pure ice. "So you're putting me under house arrest now?"
"I just want a place where we can be alone for a little while."
"For how long?"
"Until you change your mind."
She let out a dry laugh. "Then you're going to have to lock me up for the rest of my life."
His voice didn't waver. "If it takes the rest of my life, then so be it. I'm fine with that."
Seraphina didn't say another word. She simply closed her eyes again, radiating a bone-deep chill.
He walked over and scooped her up. "Let's get you cleaned up first."
He didn't put her in the bathtub. She had too many scrapes and bruises to be submerged in water.
Instead, he sat on the edge of the tub, placed her on his lap, and wrapped his arms around her. Holding a small washcloth, he meticulously and gently sponged her down.
When he was finished, he carried her carefully into the master bedroom, laid her down on the massive bed, and pulled the covers over her.
Right then, his phone started ringing.
He glanced at the caller ID, a flash of deep irritation crossing his face.
Getting up, he walked out to the balcony to answer the call, deliberately keeping his voice low. Still, snippets of the conversation drifted back into the room.
