He originally hadn't wanted to be so rough with her, but every single word out of her mouth viciously stomped on his most fragile, sensitive nerves.
Driven by pure, unfiltered instinct, he lost all restraint. The clothes she had just managed to pull back on were torn to shreds in seconds.
With a final, deafening crash, the car window completely shattered. In that exact moment, Seraphina's world plunged into total despair.
"Are you scared now?" He cradled her face, pressing a hard kiss to her lips. "I don't care who it is out there. I'm going to make sure he sees exactly whose woman you are and exactly what we're doing!"
Caspian took one look and instantly spun around.
Furious, he roared, "Are you even human, Pierce?!"
Stella lunged forward, desperate to make sure Seraphina was safe, but before she could see anything, Caspian yanked her back.
He pulled her tightly against his chest, completely shielding her view of the car.
Crying, Stella struggled against his grip. "Why are you stopping me?! Go help her!"
He held her tight, his voice softening as he tried to calm her. "Don't look. If you do, she'll be too ashamed to ever face you at the hospital again."
Understanding dawning on her, Stella slowly stopped fighting.
His tone turned glacial. "Pierce, being married to you is the worst curse that ever happened to her. If you have even a shred of pity left for her, back off and actually talk to her. Stop using your physical advantage to brutalize a woman who has already suffered enough because of you."
He gently patted Stella's back. "Let's go back inside. We need to give them a minute to clean up."
The sound of their footsteps faded until the night was completely quiet again.
It took a long time before Pierce finally released his crushing hold on her.
Leaning down, he rested his forehead against hers. His breathing was rugged, and the manic obsession in his eyes slowly dialed back, replaced by nothing but profound exhaustion and agony.
He reached up, gently brushing his fingertips against her cheek. The touch was impossibly soft, a terrifying contrast to the animalistic violence from moments before. It was as if the deranged monster who had just ripped her clothes apart was an entirely different person.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
