The doorbell chimed, the crisp sound shattering the quiet in Elara's living room.
Alaric Sawyer's heart plummeted, the rag in his hand nearly slipping to the floor. Cold sweat instantly broke out on his fingertips, a fleeting panic flashing in his eyes.
It had to be Seraphina and Pierce.
He took a deep breath, forcing himself to stay calm. He hurried to the entrance, his hand lingering on the doorknob for a few seconds before slowly pulling it open.
Seraphina and Pierce stood side by side in the doorway.
Seraphina wore a simple, plain dress. Her face was still pale, and the wound on her neck was mostly hidden by her collar, revealing only a faint sliver of a scar.
Her eyes were devoid of emotion. Her gaze swept over Alaric as if he weren't even there, passing right through him without stopping.
Pierce stood beside her in an immaculately tailored suit, his expression composed. Seeing Alaric, he gave a polite nod. "Alaric."
Alaric quickly masked his panic, forcing a stiff smile as he nodded back. "Ah, Mr. Prescott, Seraphina. You're here. Come on in."
He stepped aside to let them pass, his eyes instinctively darting away. He didn't dare meet Seraphina's gaze, terrified she would see right through him.
Pierce gently guided Seraphina by the arm, murmuring, "Let's go inside."
Seraphina ignored him and didn't spare Alaric another glance as she walked straight into the living room.
Pierce gave her back a helpless look before offering Alaric an apologetic smile. "Sorry to keep you waiting, Alaric. She hasn't been in the best mood lately and has grown a bit distant. Please don't mind her."
"No, no, not at all."
