In the interrogation room down the hall.
Officer Fletcher pushed the door open, pausing when he saw Pierce sitting in the chair. He looked him up and down with an exasperated sigh. "Mr. Prescott? You again?"
Pierce briefly raised his eyes. His face was entirely devoid of emotion, though his voice carried an undeniable exhaustion. "Officer Fletcher. It's been a while."
Fletcher pulled up a chair, flipped through the first few pages of the report on the desk, and sighed again. "It certainly has. Over the last few years, handling the cases between you and your wife has practically helped me meet my monthly quotas. But what's going on this time? How did this escalate to illegal detention?"
Pierce rubbed the bridge of his nose, his tone thick with suppressed frustration. "I didn't intend to lock her up. I just... I wanted to protect her."
"Protect her?" Fletcher scoffed, dropping the file and leaning forward. "Protecting her means locking her in an apartment, refusing to let her leave, and cutting off her communication? Mr. Prescott, that is illegal detention. It's against the law. Surely you know that?"
"I know." Pierce's voice dropped dangerously low, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the armrests. "But I have no other choice. You know better than anyone how much she suffered when I wasn't around, all because of me. Just recently, if someone hadn't warned me in time, she would have been killed. I've aggressively expanded my business over the last few years and pissed off a lot of people. They don't dare come after me directly, so they target her. I locked her up so she would be safe when I couldn't be by her side."
Fletcher studied him, his expression softening slightly.
He was familiar with Pierce's complicated history, but the law was the law, and he couldn't play favorites. "I understand you're worried about her, but your methods are wrong. She's an adult with her own agency. You can't use extreme measures to forcibly chain her to you."
"I know. But compared to her life and safety, I couldn't care less about anything else."
Pierce looked up, his eyes pleading. "Officer Fletcher, can you let me see her? She suffers from severe depression and is highly unstable. I'm terrified she might get triggered being here and do something drastic."
