The medical examiner didn't push the issue.
Knowing she didn't want to talk about it, the doctor quickly finished the examination. Confirming there were no signs of recent violence, she finally let out a breath. "Alright, you can get dressed now."
Seraphina quietly adjusted her clothes, smoothing out her cuffs, and turned to walk out.
The moment she stepped back into the interrogation room, before she could even sit down, the piercing cry of a baby echoed from the next room over.
It was a hoarse, ragged wail, thick with absolute distress, as if the infant couldn't even catch her breath. It was a heartbreaking sound.
Seraphina asked softly, "There's a baby at the station this late?"
Officer Sarah Jenkins frowned and sighed heavily. "An abandoned baby girl left at the front doors. She's only a few months old. We're trying to track down her family, but we have to keep her here for now. A bunch of burly cops have no idea how to take care of a kid, and I don't have any experience either. We can't even get her to take a bottle. She's been crying all afternoon."
Seraphina stayed silent for a few seconds before speaking softly. "Let me try."
Sarah froze, barely processing the offer before a male officer ran over clutching a swaddled infant. Sweating profusely and completely frantic, he pleaded, "Sarah, do something! She absolutely refuses to drink the formula. It's been all day! If this keeps up, she'll starve before we ever find her parents!"
Though Sarah was anxious, she was completely helpless. "I don't know what to do! I swapped the formula twice, I changed the temperature... she just won't drink it."
"You're a woman, at least try to think of something else!"
Seraphina stepped forward, her voice perfectly calm. "Let me see her."
The male officer stared at her in surprise, eyeing her up and down with obvious doubt. "You... you know how to handle babies?"
"I'm a doctor."
The officer hesitated for a moment but finally handed the bundle over.
Seraphina took the baby with effortless familiarity. She supported the infant's bottom with one hand, gently cradled her back with the other, and slowly shifted her upright. Cupping her palm, she began lightly patting the baby's back.
The baby let out several loud burps in a row.
