Pierce was still standing on the stairs. From his elevated position, he looked down at her with a condescending gaze.
After a moment, he slowly withdrew his attention, supporting Lyra as they continued their descent. "How much do you make in a month?"
Seraphina knew exactly what he meant.
With her current income, she could never afford to replace these expensive art pieces.
As they spoke, Pierce and Lyra reached the bottom floor. He gently guided her to sit on the sofa.
Lyra still looked like she was in immense pain, sinking weakly into the plush cushions.
Pierce grabbed a light throw blanket and draped it over her. "Feeling any better?"
Lyra gave a weak nod. "You don't need to make a fuss. I'm really fine. Just talk it out with Seraphina. With her salary, if she really had to pay for those art pieces, it would take her a lifetime."
Pierce offered a soft hum of agreement. "I know."
Watching their tender exchange, Sienna's eyes burned with fury. "Pierce! Have you forgotten how hard you chased my sister back in the day? The family always said you were just busy with work, and that's why you haven't come home with her for the holidays in three years. Turns out you've just been keeping a mistress on the side!"
Lyra struggled to sit up. "Sienna, you can eat whatever you want, but you shouldn't speak so carelessly. I know you're just being protective of your sister, but Pierce and I are truly just old classmates. How could you say something like that?"
"Bullshit! Old classmates? Do you think I'm blind?! Just you wait, I'm calling people over right now..."
"Calling people for what?!" Pierce's gaze sharpened, his voice cutting through the room.
He had attended many of Sienna's parent-teacher conferences in the past. When he got angry, she was still instinctively terrified of him.
She bit her lip, muttering under her breath, "Calling them to drag the homewrecker out!"
"Stop hanging around those thugs and lowlifes. They're nothing but trouble."
