Second, using methods she still didn't understand, Pierce completely severed Sienna's ties with the local gangs.
When Sienna tried to meet up with them, Pierce grabbed her by the scruff of the neck and hauled her back. "Focus on your studies. If you don't want to study, fine, but you stay put. You are absolutely forbidden from seeing those lowlifes again."
Seraphina was always gentle with her sister, and Sienna would sometimes argue back.
But Pierce carried an aura more intimidating than a strict headmaster. Around him, Sienna had no choice but to shrink back and obey like a frightened quail.
Thinking back to the past, both sisters found themselves lost in memories.
Seraphina patted her sister's shoulder from behind and asked, "Is this about getting you a job?"
She let out a sigh. "Getting into Prescott Enterprises is probably out of the question now. Give me a little more time, I'll figure something else out."
"It's not about a job," Sienna mumbled, turning around to face her. In a small voice, she confessed, "Mom and Dad are getting a divorce."
Seraphina was stunned. "Why?"
Elara and Alaric had always had a loving marriage. They had even visited her for dinner just a few days ago. Why the sudden divorce?
Sienna was still young and couldn't hold it in anymore. Tears streamed down her face. "I don't know what to do! Dad's cash flow dried up. He owes a bunch of workers their wages. They come to the house every day, causing a scene. They took everything of value. Now they're suing him, saying if he doesn't pay, he's going to jail!"
Her uncle was an independent contractor who managed a small crew of twenty to thirty men.
His business had been running smoothly for years. How could his funds suddenly dry up?
Sienna couldn't explain it either, sobbing uncontrollably. "...Dad said he saved up some money for Mom and me, and that he wants a divorce so he doesn't drag us down. When I asked you to get me a job at Pierce's company last time, it was because I was terrified those men would come after us. If I worked for Prescott Enterprises, they wouldn't dare mess with us."
