The night air was freezing.
The entire villa was engulfed in an eerie, suffocating silence.
The metallic click of the gun cocking felt like an explosion right next to her ear.
Over the past three years, Seraphina had endured countless threats and intimidation tactics. She had grown numb to ordinary scares.
But tonight, she felt like a rabbit that had just walked blindly into a snare.
She forced herself to remain calm, her voice steady as she asked, "Who sent you?"
The man standing behind her was significantly taller. His deep, raspy voice seemed to bear down on her from above. "Pierce Prescott's wife, sinking so low as to work as a caregiver for a measly fifty grand?"
Seraphina's heart plummeted.
She closed her eyes. Of course. It was about him again.
Her voice laced with exhaustion, she replied, "Haven't you people given up yet? Whether you kidnap me, torture me, or kill me, Pierce won't even bat an eye. I mean absolutely nothing to him. You can't use me to threaten him. After all these years, haven't you figured out the reality of the situation?"
The man behind her didn't say a word, but the cold barrel digging into her spine didn't waver.
Seraphina let out a heavy sigh. "Whatever. If you want to kill me, just do it. I walked right into your trap, and I probably don't have a way out anyway. Do your worst."
She gently closed her eyes, waiting for fate's execution.
A long moment passed, but the gunshot never came.
Her sharp doctor's instincts kicked in. She detected a thick, unmistakable metallic scent of blood thickening the air around her.
Behind her, the man's breathing was growing increasingly ragged and labored.
He was injured.
Seraphina's eyes snapped open. Using the faint moonlight filtering through the windows, she calculated her angle, raised her foot, and stomped down with brutal force.
The stiletto heel of her shoe drove violently into his black leather dress shoe. The man roared in pain, instinctively reaching out to grab her.
But Seraphina was fast. She dodged his grasp, pivoted, and delivered a vicious kick straight to his groin.
The man groaned in agony and crumpled to the floor.
