It was true that Seraphina used to be an easy target.
Right after Pierce first left, the mere sound of a petty thief breaking into the villa would send her spiraling into terror. She would hide under the covers, trembling and pretending to sleep until the intruder finally left.
Eventually, word got around the local underworld that she was an easy mark. The break-ins became brazen. Thieves would ransack the house, taking whatever they wanted and leaving chaos in their wake.
Wave after wave of criminals cleaned the villa out, stealing everything of value until nothing was left but her clothes.
Once the house was picked clean, they stopped coming.
Seraphina finally managed to get a few nights of decent sleep.
Until one night, a man broke into the villa. He didn't bother searching for valuables; he walked straight into her bedroom.
Seraphina buried herself under the blankets as usual, holding her breath and praying for him to leave. But the man just stood over her bed, staring. Slowly, he reached out and patted the duvet. "Pierce doesn't want you anymore. Why don't you sleep with me instead?"
He violently ripped the covers off her.
In that moment, the sheer, suffocating wave of despair nearly destroyed her.
By pure luck, police sirens wailed in the distance, spooking the man into fleeing.
After that night, Seraphina enrolled in an adult taekwondo class and learned basic self-defense.
But she wasn't naive. She knew the vast biological difference in physical strength between men and women. Knowing a few moves didn't guarantee she would survive a real attack.
So, she started keeping a surgical scalpel under her pillow.
If she could fight back, she would. If she couldn't, she planned to end her own life.
