Pierce slammed the door violently on his way out. The shockwave rattled the windows, leaving them buzzing for several seconds.
Seraphina had no interest in dissecting whatever tantrum he was throwing now. She had done what needed to be done. It was what it was.
After she got off work that evening, her mother called, asking her to come home for dinner. Apparently, her aunt Elara's family were coming over.
By the time Seraphina finished her last surgery, it was already past 7 PM. She took a cab home.
As soon as she walked in, Elara and her husband Alaric Sawyer greeted her with beaming smiles. "Seraphina, you're back! Why didn't Pierce come with you? Is he parking the car?"
Seraphina replied, "He didn't come."
"Oh, right. He's a big boss, probably overwhelmed with work."
"...Yeah."
Her mother and stepfather had lived in a coastal city for years and had just moved back last month.
Not wanting to worry her mother, Seraphina had never mentioned the truth about her and Pierce. To this day, her mother still believed Pierce was the same devoted son-in-law who treated her like his own flesh and blood.
Inside, her cousin Sienna Sawyer was there as well. She seemed to be wearing a cosplay outfit—black fishnets, towering heels, highly revealing clothes, and heavy makeup.
She waved. "Hey, Seraphina."
"Hey."
Her mother brought out the final dish from the kitchen. "Alright, everyone, dinner is ready!"
As soon as they sat down, Elara enthusiastically placed a chicken drumstick in Seraphina's bowl, her smile turning slightly sycophantic. "Seraphina! Sienna recently graduated and needs a job. But with her vocational diploma, she's having a hard time finding anything decent... Pierce's company is huge, right? Finding a light, easy job for Sienna shouldn't be hard, right?"
Seraphina fell silent for a moment before placing the drumstick back on the plate.
"Pierce and I are getting a divorce. I don't think I can help with that."
