He Finally Noticed Me Right When I Was Leaving novel Chapter 74

He had probably planned to hold that piece of leverage over her to force this evening meeting.

But fate had intervened. Because Seraphina had thrown Felicity to the ground the night before, the girl had come to the hospital for a check-up today, and Seraphina had overheard the entire plot.

Pierce shook his head in sheer disbelief. "Three years apart, and you've completely changed into someone else."

"Thanks. You too."

"How have I changed?"

Seraphina laughed bitterly. "You used to refuse to use your privilege to pull strings. I never expected you to break your own rules just for Lyra."

Pierce froze for a second, then the coldness in his face melted into something much softer. "You're jealous. I thought you were actually..."

"Let's get one thing straight, Mr. Prescott. I am a medical professional. Having my research stolen and years of hard work handed to someone else has nothing to do with jealousy. It's a matter of ethics and justice."

Pierce seemed relieved. His grip on her wrist loosened slightly, though he still held her firmly enough to prevent her escape.

"I admit I owe you for that one. I'll find a way to make it up to you, okay?"

He raised his other hand, intending to gently tap her nose.

In the past, it was their secret language.

During their honeymoon phase, whenever they argued, this gesture meant conceding defeat and ending the fight.

But she hadn't experienced that in three years.

The only recent memory she had of a man grabbing her wrist and touching her face was the kidnapper. He had groped her face and tried to slide his hand down her shirt.

She had begged, she had fought, but she was powerless.
