Slim pressed two trembling fingers under Seraphina's nose and recoiled in pure panic. "Buck, I think she's dead!"
Refusing to believe it, Buck shoved him aside and checked for himself. "She's still breathing. Barely. Call Pierce again and tell him to wire the cash immediately. This bitch is cursed! All I did was give her a little nick, how the hell did I hit an artery?!"
Buck spat on the ground and unleashed a string of furious curses.
"Pierce and his damn wife are a nightmare!"
Slim was just about to dial out using Seraphina's phone when the screen suddenly lit up.
The loud, jarring ringtone echoed violently in the dead silence of the mountain.
"Buck!" Slim squeaked, terrified. "It's an unknown number! There's no caller ID! What do we do?!"
"It's gotta be Pierce," Buck growled. "He probably doesn't want to leave a paper trail using his personal number, so he's using a burner. Answer it!"
"I don't want to, Buck, I'm scared..."
"You gutless coward! Give it here!"
Buck snatched the phone, hit accept, and held it to his ear. "Mr. Prescott, I assume you saw the photos? Someone's paying good money for your wife's head. But I'm feeling generous. Transfer the five million right now, and she lives."
The blaring ringtone had dragged Seraphina out of the dark void. Summoning every last drop of adrenaline in her dying body, she screamed, "Help... Pierce... help me..."
Seeing her reaction, Buck shoved the phone aggressively against her mouth. "Tell him to send the money! Now! Or I'm pushing this car off the cliff right now!"
Seraphina was so weak her vision had completely blurred into a mosaic of dizzying colors. Even Buck's voice sounded like it was coming from underwater.
But with the phone shoved directly into her face, her eyes focused on the last few digits on the illuminated screen.
It wasn't Pierce's number.
