Lyra's hand froze awkwardly in mid-air. "Girls like to look pretty! The nail tech said this shape was perfect for me. Look, isn't it nice?"
Pierce scowled, shaking his head. "I don't get the appeal. Show them to your friends."
"Come on, just admit they look good!"
Pierce gave them a brief, dismissive glance before his frown deepened into a harsh glare. "How are you supposed to treat patients with claws like that?"
"I'm not a traditional medicine doctor. I don't need to check pulses by hand. Being a little longer won't hurt, right?"
"I don't know the exact dress code at Metropolitan General, but if you think it won't impact your work, whatever."
Pierce pulled out his phone, scrolling through his contacts as he headed straight for the door. "Finish your milk and go to bed. I'm leaving."
"If she's not at the hospital, where are you even going? Do you even know where she lives?!"
Pierce didn't even look up as he strode out into the night.
Without missing a beat, Lyra pulled out her phone and immediately dialed a number.
It was answered almost instantly by a gravelly, authoritative voice. "Lyra?"
"Grandpa Alistair, it's me," Lyra said, forcing a convincing tremble into her voice. "Could I come stay at the main estate tonight? Being in this giant house all alone... I'm terrified. I just keep having flashbacks to that nightmare three years ago..."
Alistair's tone instantly sharpened. "Is Pierce not home?!"
"He..." Lyra intentionally hesitated. "He had some urgent business. He had to run out."
"Company business?"
"...Grandpa, I really shouldn't say."
Alistair scoffed loudly. "Stop covering for him. He went running after that Somerset girl again, didn't he?!"
