Chapter 6
The more she laughed, the harder the tears fell. Finally, she raised a hand and roughly wiped them away, her voice terrifyingly calm. I get it now.”
“Go take care of Maren. She just had a miscarriage and had a scare, she needs you.”
Seeing her sudden calmness, Theodore felt a flicker of unease, but the image of Maren’s pale, fragile face flashed in his mind, and that feeling was quickly suppressed.
He nodded, his tone softening a bit. “Get some rest. Don’t overthink things.”
With that, he turned and left the room.
Watching his determined back disappear through the doorway, Evelyn finally couldn’t hold it together anymore. She slowly curled into a ball, burying her face
in the cold blankets.
Once, if she even accidentally cut her finger, he would get incredibly nervous, carefully disinfecting it, applying a bandage, and holding her in his arms while whispering comforting words.
But now, she was covered in wounds, on the verge of death, yet for another woman, he turned and left without a moment’s hesitation.
For the next few days, Evelyn recovered alone in the hospital.
For some reason, the wound on her leg wasn’t getting better, instead, it grew more painful, even starting to swell, turn red, and ooze pus.
After an examination, the doctor told her with a grave expression that the wound was severely infected and required a second debridement surgery immediately, or the consequences would be dire.
A nurse pushed her gurney toward the operating room, the sound of its cold wheels echoing in the empty hallway.
However, right at the entrance to the operating room, she saw another scene unfolding.
Theodore was carefully pushing a wheelchair–bound Maren, speaking anxiously to a doctor.
It turned out Maren’s wound had also become infected and inflamed.
Coincidentally, the hospital currently had only one fully–equipped operating room available.
“Both patients need surgery immediately. The infections are severe, and delaying could lead to sepsis or permanent limb damage. So…” the doctor looked at
Theodore, uncertain.
Theodore’s brow furrowed. He looked at the doctor, his voice steady but filled with unwavering decisiveness. “Save Maren first.”
Even though she had expected this answer, the moment she heard him make the choice with her own ears. Evelyn’s heart felt as if it were instantly torn apart, the pain so intense it nearly suffocated her.
She remembered clearly after the car accident–he had chosen to send Maren first without a second thought.
Now, as she lay wide awake, listening to her fate being decided, he had made the exact same choice.
As she thought. In his heart, Maren’s safety was far more important than the risk of her becoming disabled.
Maren was quickly wheeled into the operating room.
Only then did Theodore walk over to Evelyn’s gurney to comfort her. “Evelyn, don’t worry. Waiting a little longer for the surgery doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad will happen, Just wait.”
Evelyn looked at him and suddenly smiled. “It’s fine. A disabled person and a man in a coma are actually a pretty good match.

The color drained from Theodore’s face. “What do you mean by that?”
Just as Evelyn was about to speak, a nurse hurried over. “Mr. Harrison, your wife’s surgery.requires your signature!
Theodore was immediately called away, without a chance to ask her what she meant.
n the empty hallway, only Evelyn was left, lying on the gurney, waiting for the closed operating room doors to open once again.
fer wound felt like it was being gnawed on by countless ants, or held over an open flame. Waves of agony washed over her, nearly shattering her will.
the bit her lower lip hard, her hands unconsciously clawing at the cold wall beside her, trying to use the pain in her fingertips to distract from the torment in ier leg.
Once, twice… her nails bent back and broke, blood mixing with dust from the wall, leaving shocking streaks on the pale surface.
The pain in her fingers was sharp, but it was nothing compared to one ten–thousandth of the agony she felt in her heart.
After what felt like a century, the light above the operating room door finally went out.
Maren was wheeled out, and Theodore immediately rushed to her side, anxiously asking about her condition as he carefully followed the gurney away.
From beginning to end, no one glanced back at Evelyn, who had long since passed out from the excruciating pain and blood loss.
Like a piece of forgotten trash, she was only hurriedly pushed into the operating room after Maren was safely gone.
