hapter 7
When she woke up again, Evelyn’s first feeling was despair.
he had prepared herself to face a disabled body. With a trembling hand, she carefully reached down toward her leg.
he could move it!
er leg could still move!
wave of ecstatic relief washed over her, so intense it almost made her cry out.
he nurse changing her dressing saw her reaction and said thankfully, “Ms. Ross, you’re so lucky. The surgery was a success, and the infection is under control.
he doctor said if it had been even fifteen minutes later, we probably wouldn’t have been able to save your leg,”
he relief of having survived intertwined with an unspeakable sense of grievance, and Evelyn broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.
the following days, Theodore still didn’t appear.
velyn had grown accustomed to the feeling of being forgotten and handled her own discharge paperwork.
he day she was discharged happened to be Maren’s birthday.
he Ross family’s villa was decorated with lights and banners for a grand birthday party.
he moment Evelyn stepped into the house, she saw her parents gathered around Maren, handing her one expensive gift after another with doting expressions
heodore stood to the side, his gaze resting tenderly on Maren, a faint smile on his lips.
he four of them stood together, happy and harmonious, looking like a real family.
nd Evelyn, like an invisible person who had wandered in by mistake, stood silently in the darkest corner, watching the glaring scene.
heodore seemed to notice her, his eyes occasionally glancing toward the corner.
laren followed his gaze and saw Evelyn too. A purely benevolent smile immediately spread across her face as she waved enthusiastically. “Evelyn, come over
ere! Let’s take a picture together!”
velyn hesitated for a moment but walked over.
owever, just as she was about to reach them, her foot suddenly caught on something.
Ah!”
he cried out, lost her balance, and crashed hard into the elaborate three–tiered cake tower next to her.
RASH–SPLAT-
ae beautiful cake tower collapsed in an instant. Cream, fruit, and cake splattered everywhere, and Evelyn fell pathetically into the middle of the mess.
Evelyn!” Her mother’s sharp reprimand rang out. She rushed over and, without a word of question, slapped Evelyn hard across the face. “Did you do that on urpose?! Are you only happy when you’ve ruined your sister’s birthday party?!”
stinging pain spread across her face. Evelyn tried to explain, “It wasn’t me, someone tripped me…”
Enough! Still trying to argue!” Ger father cut her off harshly, then ordered a servant, “Lock her in the storage closet! Don’t let her out until the party is over!”
wo servants came forward and roughly dragged the cream–covered Evelyn up from the floor.

Chapter 7
The storage closet was dark and damp, with no windows. The only light came from a single candle a servant had lit before leaving–to help her reflect. supposedly–casting a faint, yellow glow.
Evelyn hugged her knees and curled up in a cold corner, her heart even colder than the storage closet.
After some time, she smelled something burning.
She looked up sharply and saw that the candle had fallen over. The flame was now rapidly licking at a pile of old newspapers and junk in the corner.
The fire spread incredibly fast, and thick smoke instantly filled the small space.
“Cough, cough… Help! Fire! Open the door! Let me out!” Evelyn pounded frantically on the locked door, screaming for help.
Outside, the party music and laughter continued, and her cries for help were like a stone dropped into the ocean, eliciting no response.
The thick smoke was choking her. Trembling, she pulled out her phone and first called 911.
The operator told her that help was on the way but would take time, and that she should try to save herself in the meantime.
Save herself? She was locked in this airtight metal box. How was she supposed to save herself?
In desperation, she could only dial the number she knew by heart–Theodore’s number.
The phone rang for a long time before it was answered.
However, what she heard wasn’t Theodore’s voice, but the blush–inducing sounds of a man and woman’s intertwined panting and moaning.
Maren’s seductive, breathy voice came through the phone. “Theodore… between me and Evelyn… who’s… better in bed?”
It was followed by Theodore’s low, hoarse, passion–filled answer:
“You, of course…”
