On the way home.
I was walking along the riverbank.
A car suddenly screeched to a stop, and I was yanked inside before the door slammed shut.
Three big, intimidating men in the car.
I screamed for help.
Then someone knocked me out with a slap.
When I woke up, I was in some cold, unfamiliar mansion.
“Where is this?”
“Who are you people?”
There were people in the room, but nobody answered.
I felt around for my phone. Thank God it was still there. I quickly pulled it out.
But my first instinct wasn’t to call the police–I frantically started emailing that offline profile.
My whole body wouldn’t stop shaking.
“Boss, she’s using her phone. Think she’s calling the cops?”
I heard the voice and looked up nervously.
The person walking in was actually Cole Nash.
I froze.
But he approached with that cold expression, making me even more terrified. I hurriedly tried to send more emails.
But every single one just disappeared into the void.
My phone got snatched away.
“What are you sending?”
The screen was locked–without my fingerprint, he couldn’t open it.
That’s when I snapped and demanded answers.
“Cole Nash, why the hell did you kidnap me and bring me here?”
He just stared at me coldly.

Chapter 5
He was so tall, and I was trapped on this couch.
I noticed my shirt had slipped off my shoulder. Maybe it was my imagination, but I felt like his eyes were fixed on my exposed skin.
I quickly pulled my shirt back up.
Then snapped at him.
“What are you looking at?”
Maybe this was the first time I’d ever been this hostile with him since I’d fallen for him.
I was just so scared.
Where was this place?
What did he want?
But he completely ignored me and headed upstairs.
I grabbed the phone from the table and ran toward the door.
But the bodyguards blocked my way.
I turned around.
Cole was standing in the middle of the staircase, watching me.
“Don’t waste your energy. This is my territory. You think you’re leaving without my permission?”
My temples started throbbing.
“What do you want? It’s late. I need to go home.”
“I told your father I needed to talk to you. He agreed.”
What?
Dad knew Cole had taken me.
Of course. Three years ago, when Cole told me to get out of the country, Dad didn’t dare object either.
Even if Cole brought me here to settle scores, Dad could only agree.
I felt all the fight drain out of me.
But what did he actually want?
I figured it out–it was because of what I’d said at the bar.
My provocation hadn’t worked at the bar.
No wait, the Kane family still had some standing in the city. He probably didn’t want to make a scene in front of everyone.
So he brought me to his territory to teach me a lesson.

Chapter
Everything suddenly made sense.
I stood up defiantly,
“Don’t go anywhere. Tell your guys to get it over with. Once they’re done beating me, I’m going home. I don’t have time to waste here with you.”
The man on the stairs seemed to hear something unbelievable.
He turned and came back down.
“What did you say?”
I used to live and die for that face.
But why did he look so sanctimonious to me now?
Why did my past self seem so stupid?
“Stop pretending. You just want to get back at me for Wren, right? Go ahead. As long as you don’t kill me, I’m still leaving.”
“Just being in your place makes me feel like I can’t breathe.”
I don’t know which part pissed him off.
He suddenly grabbed my throat.
“Say that again. My place makes you feel like you can’t breathe?”
I clawed at his hand, but couldn’t break free, so I just gave up.
But then he let go.
I leaned against the wall, coughing violently.
“Iris, if you don’t want to die, keep your mouth shut.”
