Chapter 6
I stayed up until dawn.
I’d searched every inch of the first floor but couldn’t find any way to escape.
Finally, cold and hungry, I found a bedroom on the first floor, wrapped myself in a blanket, and collapsed on the bed.
My sleep was full of nightmares.
I dreamed about my days overseas, kicking and thrashing.
“Stay away from me.”
“Don’t touch me!”
“I don’t have any money, I swear I don’t have anything left. Please just leave me alone.”
“It hurts so much. Daddy, Mommy, please help me!”
“What do you mean I can’t sell blood anymore? I’m fine, I can still do it.”
“Please, doctor, I’m desperate for the money!”
Every time I fell into these nightmares, I couldn’t wake up. Only after living through all of them, like some kind of punishment, would I finally
be released.
Through the haze, someone seemed to be standing nearby, shouting loudly.
“What are you standing around for? Go get a doctor.”
“Yes, sir.”
The nightmare finally got interrupted.
I rolled over, curled up, and fell back asleep.
A little while later, it felt like someone was touching my hand.
Then something cold flowed up my arm and through my whole body.
My uncomfortable body felt a bit better.
“How is she?”
“Still running a fever. After three IV bags, it should come down.”
The conversation continued.
“There’s a room next door. You can rest there.”
“Mr. Nash, can I examine Miss Kane’s body? I’ll need to remove some clothing.”

Chapter 6
The person speaking was stammering.
“Sorry, I don’t mean anything by it. Maybe you should do it, Mr. Nash.”
“What exactly are you trying to say?” The voice sounded exactly like Cole Nash.
“Miss Kane seems to have a lot of injuries.”
“You can go now.”
In my sleep, I felt someone moving my clothes.
I instinctively raised my hand to block them.
But my whole body was weak, and I couldn’t stop it.
My shirt was pulled off.
I was furious.
“Don’t touch my clothes.”
Maybe because the person’s movements were gentle, I wasn’t as scared.
I mumbled.
“Put it back on, please. If I get cold, everything’s gonna hurt again.”
“Some of these scars keep trying to heal but they just won’t close up right.”
In my dreams, in the warmth, a drop of something warm fell on my chest.
Deep in my sleep, I actually dreamed of Cole Nash for the first time in years.
And he was crying.
In the pitch–black dreamscape, was I seeing things?
I wanted to chase after him, to see more clearly.
But it was already getting light.
