Chapter 20

Chloe’s entire body ached with a deep, throbbing pain, but thankfully, her limbs weren’t trapped.

The image of Ethan shielding her with his own body flashed violently in her mind.

A sudden, sharp panic shot through her heart. “Ethan, are you okay? Are you hurt?”

After a long, terrifying moment, a strained voice came from behind her.

“I’m fine, Chloe. You crawl out first, I’m right behind you.”

Hearing this, she grit her teeth and started to crawl out of the wreckage. Being small and slender, she managed to squeeze her way out relatively

quickly.

But when Chloe turned back to help Ethan, she saw that his face was covered in blood, and he was hopelessly pinned in the driver’s seat.

Her heart sank like a stone to the pit of her stomach.

“It’s okay, don’t be scared, it’s just a scratch. Can you go stand over there, a safe distance away, and call for an ambulance, okay?”

Ethan fought through the agony to keep his voice steady, trying to comfort her in a low, reassuring voice.

But Chloe absolutely refused to leave his side.

She tried desperately to pull Ethan out of the mangled driver’s seat.

But it was no use. Just then, she heard frantic footsteps behind her. Ryan had arrived.

The truck was now completely engulfed in roaring, hungry flames.

Jessica, trapped inside, let out a series of heart–wrenching screams for help.

“Ryan! Ryan, save me! It hurts so much, please, you have to come save me!”

She pounded frantically on the window, her eyes fixed on Ryan.

But he didn’t even spare her a single glance. He ran straight to Chloe, pulling her close to check if she was safe.

Chloe, completely beside herself with panic, grabbed Ryan’s arm.

“Please, you have to save him! Please, save Ethan!”

Tears blurred her vision as she sobbed and pleaded, her only thought, her only prayer, being that Ethan had to survive.

After quickly making sure she wasn’t seriously injured, Ryan started to help try and rescue Ethan.

Several minutes passed.

But they were getting nowhere.

The sharp, acrid smell of dripping gasoline grated on everyone’s nerves.

Chapter 20

Ethan suddenly grabbed Ryan’s hand. “Get Chloe out of here first. Now.”

Their eyes met, and in that instant, Ryan understood exactly what he was saying.

He knew he wasn’t going to make it out. He wanted Ryan to take Chloe and get her to safety.

Ryan didn’t say a word. He scooped up Chloe and started carrying her away from the wreck.

Ethan’s eyes were filled with a profound, heartbreaking love and a deep reluctance to let her go.

Chloe realized what was happening and started to scream, “Let go of me! Put me down! Let me go save him!”

She wasn’t strong, but every blow she landed on Ryan felt unbearable to him.

But still, he didn’t stop walking.

“Ryan, if he dies, I will hate you for the rest of my life!”

At her words, Chloe felt Ryan’s body go completely stiff. Then, he put her down.

She immediately started running back towards Ethan.

But Ryan grabbed her, holding her firmly by the shoulders.

“Chloe, listen to me. You stay right here where it’s safe. I’ll go save Ethan for you.”

With that, he gave her one last, deep, meaningful look, and then, without turning back, he walked towards the car, which was now emitting thick, black smoke.

Seeing him approach, Ethan panicked again.
