Chapter 21
Chloe stared blankly, unseringly, at the inferno.
Suddenly, through the smoke, she saw two figures lying on the ground not far away.
A violent tremor shot through her heart. She scrambled and crawled, desperately making her way towards them.
Ethan was still mostly conscious.
Just as the explosion happened, Ryan had tackled him to the ground, shielding him from the worst of the blast with his own body.
Chloe ran over and helped him sit up, her face a mask of raw anxiety and terror.
“Ethan, how are you feeling? Just hold on, okay? The ambulance will be here any second.”
The man reached up with a trembling hand to wipe away her tears.
“Don’t cry, Chloe. Don’t be scared. I’m okay.”
At his words, Chloe only cried harder, her sobs wracking her entire body.
Her cries seemed to stir the last, fading flicker of consciousness in the unconscious Ryan.
He struggled to force his eyes open, wanting to comfort Chloe, but he saw that her entire world, her entire focus, was on Ethan. She hadn’t even glanced back at him once.
In that moment, the pain in his heart completely overshadowed the excruciating pain in his body.
He even started to regret saving Ethan.
Ryan couldn’t speak. He could only gaze at Chloe’s profile until his consciousness faded completely. In his final moments, all the jealousy and regret in his heart melted away, replaced by a strange sense of relief.
This was for the best.
As long as Chloe could be happy, it’s worth sacrificing his own life.
After a three–hour surgery.
Ethan was officially out of danger, but Ryan’s injuries were far too severe, and he was moved to the intensive care unit.
Chloe stayed in the hospital room every day, personally taking care of Ethan.
But she refused to give him so much as a pleasant look.
She was angry that Ethan had told Ryan to take her away while he stayed behind to die.
Even though she knew that staying there would have just meant another life senselessly lost.
She was still angry and deeply, profoundly hurt.

Chapter 21
“Chloe, my sweet Chloe, please just talk to me. I’ll never do it again, I promise. Please forgive me.”
Ethan held her hand, putting on a pitiful, puppy dog act, calling her name over and over again, begging for her forgiveness in a low, pleading
voice.
Chloe looked down, her own voice trembling.
“Then you have to promise me that you will never, ever leave me behind alone again.”
To this day, she still couldn’t bear to think about the moment she saw that car explode, about the utter despair she had felt.
She didn’t know what she would have done if Ethan had really been gone.
Tears streamed down her face, completely beyond her control.
A sharp pang of pain went through Ethan’s heart. He pulled her into a tight embrace and whispered soothing words in her ear.
“I promise, I will never leave you. Please stop crying.”
But if he had to do it all over again, he would still make the exact same choice. He would gladly give his own life to protect the woman he loved.
By the time Ethan was discharged from the hospital, Ryan was still in a coma.
Chloe had gone to see him a few times.
