Scarlett Langley followed Julian and his father into the Croft estate, feeling as though she had stepped back in time.
Nestled in an exclusive, century-old suburban neighborhood of Bay City, the estate's heavy red doors and weathered brass knockers whispered tales of history.
With her arm looped through Madeleine Dawson's, Scarlett followed the Croft men through the winding corridors. Every step revealed a new, breathtaking view.
Pavilions and terraces hugged the edge of a serene koi pond, while meticulously arranged rock gardens and winding pathways showcased the absolute pinnacle of classical landscape design.
She used to think the Flynn Estate was the height of luxury, but compared to this, it was just scratching the surface.
The Croft residence was a labyrinth of elegance. By the time they reached the main hall, Scarlett was stepping as carefully as a first-time visitor to a royal palace.
The interior was furnished with solid, dark wood pieces that grounded the space. Priceless antiques and luminous paintings adorned the walls, basking in the warm glow of the lighting.
Dominic Croft had called ahead, and Julian's mother was already waiting.
Seeing them arrive, she stood up with a warm, welcoming smile.
Introductions were made, and Scarlett learned that this graceful woman was Elara Chapman, a university literature professor and a renowned children's author.
Dressed in a stunning vintage-inspired gown, she carried herself with an air of timeless sophistication. She looked as though she had stepped straight out of an elegant period drama.
Elara affectionately took Scarlett's hand, her eyes sparkling with delight. "I never imagined the brilliant 'Zephyr' would be such a stunning, vibrant young woman."
She turned to Madeleine, feigning a glare. "Mom, why didn't you tell me? Dominic shares every single one of Zephyr's articles with me. We've been dying to meet her! We even placed a bet—I said Zephyr was a brilliant, independent woman like you, and he swore it was some stuffy old professor. Turns out, we were both wrong!"
Julian immediately fired back. "Dad, you're the one who always said 'knowledge has no borders' and that we should learn from the best everywhere. Why are you suddenly throwing your own son under the bus the second Scarlett arrives?"
Elara laughed, smoothly playing peacekeeper. "Alright, alright. Julian's achievements in architecture speak for themselves; stop teasing him. It's an absolute honor to have Zephyr here. Please, take a seat. Let me know if you have any dietary restrictions."
The group moved to the dining room and took their seats.
Overwhelmed by their warmth, Scarlett quickly waved her hands. "Please, just call me Scarlett. And I eat everything, thank you."
She picked up her teacup and stood up slightly. "Thank you both so much for having me. I'd love to propose a toast to you all."
The dinner was far more relaxed than she had anticipated. Despite their status, Julian's parents and Madeleine were incredibly down-to-earth, making the evening lively and entirely enjoyable.
