"Well said!" Elara praised, patting Scarlett’s hand as they walked away. "That’s exactly the attitude you need with them. You and Dawn didn't have anyone in your corner before, but now, the Croft family is your ultimate shield. If anyone dares speak to you like that again, they'll have to deal with me first."
Chatting and laughing, they seamlessly resumed their afternoon, leaving Corinne standing in the middle of the mall, completely ignored.
Corinne stared at their retreating backs, her chest heaving with rage. She never imagined the daughter-in-law she had stepped on for years would pivot so spectacularly into the lap of luxury.
It won't last! Corinne thought venomously. Julian’s just infatuated. She’ll be tossed out on the street eventually, and she’ll be the laughingstock of Bay City!
As she mentally cursed Scarlett into oblivion, her phone suddenly buzzed. The name "Veronica Thorne" flashed on the screen.
Eager to vent, Corinne answered immediately. "Veronica, you will never guess who I just ran into! I am absolutely furious!"
Before Veronica could even say a word, Corinne launched into a tirade. "I just saw Scarlett and Elara strolling around, laughing like best friends! That pathetic Scarlett was practically kissing the ground Elara walked on, buying her over a dozen new outfits!"
Desperate to soothe her wounded ego, Corinne then began barking orders. "Veronica, you're my daughter-in-law now. You’re younger, more beautiful, and a thousand times more capable than Scarlett! You cannot let me lose face against that old witch Elara. They’re still at the mall. Bring your credit card and get over here right now. Buy me some brand-new designer pieces so I can strut right past Elara and reclaim my dignity!"
