Yardley ended the call and stared heavily out the window at the bleak, gray sky.
The weather in Bay City hadn't cleared up once since the day of his daughter's one-month milestone. The constant gloom only magnified the suffocating pressure in his chest.
He tried calling Scarlett again, even swapping to several different burner phones, but every single number returned the same automated message. He was completely blocked.
Shoving his phone into his pocket, he grabbed his car keys and stormed out of the study.
If she wouldn't answer his calls, he would drive straight to The Grandview and drag her out.
He demanded to know if destroying his and Sylvia's reputations was truly the endgame she wanted.
She had always been meticulous and thoughtful, never one to sabotage the bigger picture.
What exactly was she trying to achieve this time?!
Meanwhile, over at Orchard Villa.
Scarlett had received a text from Leah, one of the household staff, informing her that Sylvia had blatantly moved in with her son. Infuriated, Scarlett drove straight back.
Stepping into the grand living room, she spotted Sylvia and Corinne sitting shoulder-to-shoulder on the sofa, frantically discussing damage control.
Their backs were to the entrance, and they were so engrossed in their panicked scheming that they didn't hear Scarlett approach.
Sylvia was softly sobbing.
"Aunt Corinne, what am I going to do? The Crofts already heard rumors about Yardley and me years ago. Seeing this article, they're going to think it's all true. My mother-in-law didn't yell on the phone, she just told me to come to the Croft Estate for lunch tomorrow... but I'm terrified."
Corinne clutched her chest, trembling with absolute fury.
"I am so incredibly angry! Scarlett just wants to watch the world burn. I can't believe she actually had the guts to do this!"
"Yardley and I are completely innocent! I admit I was naive and had a crush on him when I was younger, but that was years ago. Everything changed."
Tears streamed down Sylvia's face as she choked back her victimized sobs.
"Aunt Corinne, if my marriage with Julian falls apart, the business partnership between the Flynns and the Crofts will be ruined. You have to find a way to deal with Scarlett."
