Despite his firm decision to go through with the divorce, Yardley Flynn didn't sleep a wink all night.
He and Scarlett Langley had agreed to meet at dawn to handle the handover. He was going to give her the keys to Orchard Villa along with all the funds she had requested.
Afterward, they would head to City Hall together to finalize the paperwork.
Their relationship would officially come to an end.
From then on, they would go their separate ways, never to cross paths again.
As for their daughter, he had weighed his options for a long time. She was still so little, and he figured she would be better off with her mother. Because of that, he hadn't fought for custody.
With all his chaotic thoughts finally cleared, the matter had reached its ultimate conclusion.
Yet, Yardley felt an echoing emptiness in his chest. A deep, unsettling restlessness plagued him throughout the night.
Laying in the master bed of Orchard Villa for the very last time, he tossed and turned until he finally managed to drift into a fitful sleep.
He began to dream.
In the dream, Scarlett was still heavily pregnant, her due date rapidly approaching.
She was wearing her usual beige knit dress, one hand supporting her aching lower back and the other resting beneath her heavy belly as she stood at the entrance of Orchard Villa.
Her eyes were red and pleading. "Honey, I could go into labor at any minute. Could you skip the business trip to Country A and stay with me?"
In the dream, he was dressed in a crisp suit, holding a briefcase. Faced with Scarlett's vulnerable, begging gaze, his expression lacked even a sliver of a husband's tenderness.
He frowned, his tone exceptionally cold. "I've been preparing for this project in Country A for six months. I can't just walk away now. Didn't I book a night nurse and a suite at the luxury postpartum care center for you? It's just having a baby. It'll be over soon. You can handle this on your own. Stop being so dramatic."
The usually gentle Scarlett suddenly underwent a terrifying transformation.
