Sylvia sounded completely bursting with confidence, her voice bubbling with joyous laughter.
Yardley checked his watch, a fond smile touching his lips.
"Then you need to get to the banquet immediately. They're going to announce the winner's name shortly."
"This is the perfect chance for you to step onto the stage, reclaim your dignity, and rebuild your reputation."
"Sylvia, I always told you that with your talent and creativity, as long as you actually buckled down and focused, you could be one of the top designers in the country."
He paused for a moment before adding, "Scarlett was only ever more hardworking than you. When it comes to natural talent, she can't even hold a candle to you."
Hearing that sent a thrill of vindictive pleasure through Sylvia. "I know, Yardley! I'm on my way right now!"
Hanging up, she sprinted into her walk-in closet, frantically digging out a stunning evening gown that had been gathering dust. She practically threw it on, slapped together a hasty but glamorous makeup look, and rushed straight to the venue.
Yardley's mood had visibly brightened. He grabbed a flute of champagne from a passing waiter and took a satisfying sip.
Veronica, who had been searching the room for him, finally spotted him standing alone in a corner. She walked up, eyeing the relaxed expression on his face.
"Yardley, you're smiling. What's got you in such a good mood?"
He took another sip.
"That Gold Award they just announced? It's highly likely Sylvia won it. I'm just happy for her."
"Really?" Veronica looked genuinely shocked. "I thought she just lounged around all day doing nothing. She's actually an architect?"
Yardley nodded.
"She graduated from one of the top architectural programs. I used to tutor her when she was younger, and she was always at the top of her class. She really does have a gift for design. It's just that she gets easily distracted and impatient. She always found the grind too tedious, so she eventually stopped trying."
