After hearing Wynette's words, Adriel couldn't help laughing along.
So all this time, the Shepherds really thought they had Wynette completely under control.
Little did they know, Wynette had been playing dumb while seeing through everything the entire time.
Thinking back to all the smug expressions the Shepherds used to wear, Adriel figured they'd probably blow a gasket if they knew what Wynette was actually thinking now.
Adriel quietly studied the woman beside him, a trace of heartache flashing through his eyes.
As if sensing his gaze, Wynette lowered her head and silently drank her beer.
Seeing her slightly avoidant attitude, Adriel finally voiced what had been sitting in his heart. "When I said I like you, it wasn't some impulsive spur-of-the-moment thing, Wynette. Even if you can't accept it, please don't avoid me because of it. I never wanted to make things difficult for you."
In the end, he still brought up his confession.
Mostly because he'd spent the entire day waiting for a response from her, yet she'd stayed silent the whole time.
And honestly, it made him uneasy.
Wynette let out a soft sigh. She'd known Adriel would definitely bring this up eventually.
Under his steady gaze, she answered quietly, "I know you're not the kind of person who jokes around about feelings."
Just from the fact that there hadn't been a single scandal involving Adriel over the years, it was obvious he wasn't someone who treated relationships casually.
And she believed his confession had been sincere.
After thinking for a moment, Wynette continued, "Your confession actually made me feel more confident about myself. At least it proved I'm not as terrible as people make me out to be. I mean, if a man as outstanding as you likes me, then I must be pretty good too.
"Honestly, I should probably thank you for that." She smiled at Adriel. "And I never planned on avoiding you."
Her expression turned serious. "You confessed to me. It's not like you committed some unforgivable crime. Why would I avoid you? There's no reason for that.
"I actually planned to reply to your messages, but I got busy and completely forgot. If that made you misunderstand something, then I sincerely apologize right now. That really wasn't my intention."
Wynette paused briefly before continuing, "As for your confession... if you really want an answer from me, I just got out of a terrible relationship. Right now, I honestly don't have any intention of starting another one anytime soon.
"But feelings are unpredictable, right? I can't exactly cross my heart and swear I'll never like you. What if I end up embarrassing myself later?"
You should never make absolute declarations too casually because life had a way of making you eat your own words every single time.
From beginning to end, Adriel never interrupted her once. He simply listened quietly to everything she was feeling.
Wynette sighed softly. "The only thing I can honestly admit right now is that I don't dislike you. And whenever I'm around you, I feel... comfortable."
That was the conclusion Wynette had reached after spending time with him lately.
As far as Wynette was concerned, she genuinely didn't dislike him at all.
Wynette smiled at him softly. "You're a really wonderful person."
But after that, she suddenly didn't know how to continue.
No matter what she said next, it would sound strange.
The moment Adriel heard her words, he quickly cut her off. "You're not about to hand me the 'you're such a good guy' speech, are you? Please don't. I refuse to be friend-zoned.
"Like I said, you don't need to feel pressured because I confessed to you. I just thought you deserved to know how I feel. And honestly, I simply wanted you to know that I like you and want to pursue you.
"Of course, if the way I'm pursuing you ever makes you uncomfortable or annoyed, I'll try to adjust. But..."
He paused briefly. "I just think I deserve the chance to at least fight for my place. If you don't want to start another relationship right now, that's okay. But when you finally do feel like falling in love again someday... could you prioritize me first?"
Adriel genuinely didn't think asking for the right to pursue her was too much.
Meanwhile, Wynette felt her heart skip uncontrollably after hearing his words.
Seriously, this man was dangerously smooth.
If Adriel hadn't been staring at her with such sincerity right now, Wynette would've honestly suspected he was deliberately using reverse psychology to draw her in.
Meeting the honesty in his eyes, Wynette forcefully suppressed the fluttering in her chest. "We'll talk about it when the time comes."
She still didn't agree immediately.
