After coming down from the mountain, Wynette got a call from Lorelei.
Lorelei said she wanted to see her.
They agreed to meet at a café the next morning.
When Wynette arrived, Lorelei was already there waiting.
Her foot was still in a cast, and she sat quietly in a wheelchair.
The moment she saw Wynette, she gave a small smile. "I thought you weren't going to show up."
"Sorry. Traffic was terrible," Wynette replied honestly.
Lorelei simply smiled at her.
Looking at the woman in front of her, still pale and worn out, Wynette suddenly realized she had never imagined a day would come when she and Lorelei could sit across from each other this peacefully.
"What did you want to see me about?" Wynette asked bluntly.
Lorelei looked at her. "I need a favor."
Wynette's tone stayed calm. "And you think I'd actually help you?"
With how hostile things had been between them before, why would Lorelei think she would agree? More importantly, why should Wynette trust her?
Lorelei pressed her lips together. After a long pause, she finally spoke again. "Eve got out on bail. Even with all the evidence I handed over, the Shepherds can get her released without much trouble."
There was clear resentment in her voice.
Honestly, Lorelei had expected this from the beginning.
Because Eve was still out on bail, she didn't dare make any direct moves against Lorelei for now. But the Shepherds had been trying nonstop to contact her and negotiate. They wanted to pay her off.
Lorelei refused to meet any of them. She had been hiding the whole time, afraid they would track her down.
Wynette listened quietly without interrupting.
To begin with, she never expected Lorelei to actually put Eve behind bars. She had only wanted Lorelei to use the situation as leverage.
But now, Wynette was beginning to wonder what Lorelei was really after.
At first, she thought Lorelei was smart enough to use this opportunity to gain something for herself.
Lorelei kept her eyes fixed on Wynette. "I know what happened to Payton's company was your doing. You already planned to cut ties with the Shepherds a long time ago. That's why you kept letting me go after you before."
This time, Lorelei had finally figured it out.
Ever since Payton's company ran into trouble, she had been replaying everything in her mind.
Back then, she had proudly thought she had beaten Wynette. Now she realized the idiot had been her.
Wynette had allowed everything to happen on purpose.
Wynette didn't deny it. She only smiled faintly.
Lorelei knew she couldn't do anything about it. After all, everything she said was only speculation. She had no proof.
Lorelei let out a quiet laugh.
"Wynette, I've been your pawn for long enough. Out of basic human kindness, help me this once. Don't worry. I'll make it worth your while. Here is a gift for you."
She took a flash drive out of her bag and placed it in front of Wynette.
Wynette glanced down at it.
"I also have some photos," Lorelei said.
She pulled out her phone and opened her gallery.
The pictures showed Eve standing beside an unfamiliar woman, who looked familiar to Wynette.
"Your mother's best friend," Lorelei said, pointing at the woman on the screen. "She's also the one who nearly bankrupted your family."
