The next day, Wynette brought up the idea of getting a full checkup for Ryker.
Ryker could tell she had been worrying about his condition. Not wanting her to keep stressing herself out, he finally agreed.
After getting in touch with Gavin, Wynette brought Ryker to the hospital for a series of tests.
The entire time, Gavin stayed right beside her.
Adriel had wanted to come too, but Carl called him to return to the family estate that morning.
Before leaving, Adriel repeatedly reminded Gavin to stay with Wynette and keep an eye on everything.
Gavin was standing beside her with sleepy eyes and a tired expression. Wynette asked softly, "Why don't you go home and get some rest?"
He looked like he could barely stay awake.
Gavin scratched through his messy hair and laughed. "I'm okay. My sleep schedule's just ruined. I'm not used to waking up this early."
Most nights, Gavin stayed awake until four or five in the morning before finally going to bed; he would wake up in the late afternoon.
After years of living like that, his body had gotten completely used to it.
Wynette frowned slightly after hearing that. "You need to take care of yourself. Staying up all night really hurts your health."
"I know, sister-in-law," Gavin said with a teasing smile.
Every time he called her by name like that, Wynette never knew how to react.
Since Gavin had already made arrangements ahead of time, Ryker finished all the tests quickly.
Fifteen minutes later, all the reports were sent to Gavin.
Once the examinations were over, Wynette asked Kaylee to take Ryker home while she stayed behind at the hospital for the results.
Gavin carefully looked through every report before finally speaking. "There are traces of those two drugs in his blood," he said seriously. "But the dosage is minimal. Either this only started recently, or..."
He paused for a second before continuing. "The other side probably worried you'd notice something, so they only slipped him the drugs from time to time. Little by little, it stopped Mr. Jewell from recovering properly. But looking at the results, it's not too serious. Luckily, you found out in time."
Too much time had already passed. If Ryker had not been exposed to the drugs over a long period, the tests would not have detected anything now.
Still, after three years without proper recovery, Gavin suspected someone had been secretly adding small amounts into Ryker's medication every now and then.
The purpose was obvious. They never wanted Ryker to recover.
Wynette finally relaxes with Gavin's assurance. The fear that had been hanging over her head slowly faded away.
"Does my dad still have a chance to recover?" she asked quietly.
Gavin answered, "The test results look fine. As long as Mr. Jewell cooperates with treatment, recovery is still possible. But you should already know there may be some lasting effects. His mouth might stay slightly crooked, and his movements probably won't be as smooth as before."
He felt it was better to tell her honestly about the possible aftereffects.
Wynette nodded calmly. "I understand. As long as my dad can stand up again, the rest doesn't matter."
She knew very well that after a stroke and paralysis, being able to recover this much was already a blessing.
"Thanks for today," Wynette said gratefully. "I'll treat you to dinner another day, Mr. Holloway. I hope you'll come."
Gavin laughed immediately. "Sure. But there's no need for you to spend money. Just make Adriel pay."
He never missed a chance to help bring Adriel and Wynette closer together.
Naturally, Wynette understood exactly what he meant. For a moment, she did not know what to say.
After leaving the hospital, Wynette drove alone to the center.
On the way there, Shirley called her.
